There are various legends about how the Tigers got their nickname. One involves the orange stripes they wore on their black stockings. Tigers manager George Stallings took credit for the name; however, the name appeared in newspapers before Stallings was manager. That was Spencer Haywood who spent 13 seasons in pro ball with the Nuggets, Supersonics, Knicks, Jazz, Lakers, and Bullets. He left the school after one year (a wild and tumultuous one) and did not graduate until sometime later. He broke the legal barrier to undergraduates going into pro ball.
