How is assimilation different from absorption of nutrients of digested food?

Absorption is whereby the digested food substances are entering our bloodstream. Assimilation is whereby the body makes use of these absorbed food substances that has entered our blood

What happens to your intestines if you have a heart attack?

intestinal ischemia and infarction is damage to (ischemia) or death of (infarction) part of the intestine due to a decrease in its blood supply.

CausesThere are several possible causes of intestinal ischemia and infarction.

Hernia: If the intestine moves into the wrong place or becomes tangled, this can lead to intestinal ischemia.

Adhesions: The intestine may become trapped in scar tissue from past surgery (adhesions). This can lead to ischemia if left untreated.

Embolus: A blood clot from the heart or main blood vessels may travel through the bloodstream and block one of the arteries supplying the intestine. People who have had a heart attack or who have arrhythmias, such as atrial fibrillation, are at risk for this problem.

Arterial thrombosis: The arteries that supply blood to the intestine may become so narrowed fromatherosclerotic disease (cholesterol buildup) that they become blocked. When this happens in the arteries to the heart, it causes a heart attack. When it happens in the arteries to the intestine, it causes intestinal ischemia.

Venous thrombosis: The veins carrying blood away from the intestines may become blocked by blood clots. This blocks blood flow into the intestines. This is more common in people with liver disease, cancer, or blood clotting disorders.

Low blood pressure: Very low blood pressure in patients who already have narrowing of the intestinal arteries may also cause intestinal ischemia. This typically occurs in patients who are very ill for other reasons. It can be compared to losing water pressure in a hose with a partial blockage.

SymptomsThe hallmark symptom of intestinal ischemia is abdominal pain. Other symptoms include:
  • Diarrhea
  • Fever
  • Vomiting
Exams and TestsLaboratory tests may show a high white blood cell (WBC) count (a marker of infection) and increased acid in the bloodstream. There may be bleeding in the GI tract.

Other tests include:

  • Angiogram
  • CT scan of the abdomen
  • Doppler ultrasound of the abdomen

None of these tests are foolproof, however. Sometimes the only sure way to diagnose intestinal ischemia is with a surgical procedure.

TreatmentTreatment usually requires surgery. The section of intestine that has died is removed, and the healthy remaining ends of bowel reconnected.

In some cases, a colostomy or ileostomy is needed. The blockage of arteries to the intestine is corrected, if possible.

Outlook (Prognosis)Intestinal ischemia is a serious condition that can result in death if not treated promptly. The outlook depends on the cause. A good outcome may be achieved with prompt treatment. Possible ComplicationsIntestinal infarction may require a colostomy or ileostomy, which may be short-term or permanent. Peritonitis is common in these cases.

Some people may develop severe illness, with fever and a bloodstream infection (sepsis).

When to Contact a Medical ProfessionalCall your health care provider if you have any severe abdominal pain. PreventionPreventive measures include:
  • Control risk factors, such as irregular heartbeat, high blood pressure, and high cholesterol
  • Do not smoke
  • Eat a nutritious diet
  • Quickly treat hernias
Alternative NamesIntestinal necrosis; Ischemic bowel; Dead bowel; Dead gut

What helps digest the facts in food?

Your brain does the digesting of facts with commonsensides

(If it's fat your thinking of then it's a group of enzymes called lipases but also bile from your liver and gall bladder help by emulsifying the fats and oils (emulsify turns it into little droplets)

What the most important the circulatory and respiratory systems or the digestive system and why?

Well, it depends on the organism an the requirement. If you talk about lower organisms like poriferans they don't have circulatory system, respiratory system neither digestive system, simple diffusion occurs in their body as they do not need such system because of their environment and simplicity of development.

If you consider flat worms (platyhelminthes) they have a low digestive system but lack any circulatory system as their cells are enogh close to the environment simple diffusion fulfills the respiratory requirement.

The need, importance and significance increases with the complexity of an orgnism.

As the man is most complex each system is really important. Without digestive system you can't make food simple, without respiratory system you can't yield energy, without circulatory system you can't supply energy or nutrients to the cells at distances.

Hope you've got the answer of the question :)

Why does the Esophagus have saliva?

the mouth has salivary glands to help the food go down the esophagus easier

What in the large intestine helps with the breakdown of waste?

There is enzyme called caltimeg in the large intestine that breaks down fats and protein.

Why doesn't the chemical eat away stomach lining?

The chemical doesn't eat away the stomach lining because our stomach lining is surrounded by a thick layer of mucus that can resist the chemical in the stomach.

What is the digestive system all about?

What helps push food down to the back of the mouth where it is swallowed?

The tongue is a muscle which pushes food to the back of the mouth, where it the food is then swallowed.

What are the eight organs of digestion?

Tongue, Epiglottis, oesophagus, Stomach, Pancreas, Small intestine, Large intestine, Rectum, Anus

Is it good for children to lay down after eating?

It's good for everyone to take it easy a bit after a meal to digest the food in peace, either lay down or just sit and talk at the table. It's normal that you feel a bit sleepy by then since all the blood is focused on digesting the food.

What is the organ uses both chemical and mechanical digestions to break?

It's simple it's your mouth. I know it might sound crazy but it's true. Inside your mouth you have teeth you crush and tear of meat, so that's mechanical. Your spit contains enzymes to convert starch into sugars, so that's mechanical.

What boosts alertness and diminishes appetite?
