Professional puppeteers- who nearly always made their own puppets or marionettes would include such names as Jim Henson ( muppets), Bil Baird ( always spelled it Bil, not Bill)- he produced the Show-Go-Round at the Chrysler pavilion at the World"s fair, not the NY Chrysler Building. Another pro puppeteer would have to be the British science-fiction mogul- Gerry Anderson. Henson and Baird are deceased, Mr. Anderson is still alive.

I wish I knew. I would like to have one too. I had one years ago but it was thrown out. (not by me). If anyone finds one please let me know. This is what they look like. They were about 10 to 12 inches in height.

I believe you are referring to Alexandra, who was the last Czarina or Empress of Russia, and the mother of the better-known Anastasia and kin. A number of dolls, some real porcelain museum pieces- not playthings, have been done on the Romanov family, and the Empress has not been excluded. It should be noted Her Imperial Highness was of German extraction, her maiden name was Von Hess ( it"s an instant Gas!) not that Hess, but surely a most German handle.

Nobody actually knows for sure as evidence of dolls date back all the way to the stone age(3300 BC-ish).. some of these "dolls" are assumed to be made for religious observances though it is impossible to be sure. but as far as we can tell, as long as there have been people, there have been figures or dolls made to look like them or the animals they saw.

As for what the first doll was named?... I'd guess "ugh" but your guess is as good as mine.

the Collector's Choice "genuine fine bisque porcelain" dolls had what seems like bizillions made. They are beautiful, but plentiful, so they go for roughly $12-$20 USD. Some one is trying to sell one for $64. It's a nice one, but there are similar ones in the price range I mentioned. Hope that helps.

You could brush it with a soft newborn baby hair brush to keep it knot free but don't wash it because that might damage it.

You can buy new dolls through a Japanese site called Noppin. Their "Unoa Annex" maybe be found here: /noppin.ocnk.net/ They have a couple of open ordering periods throughout the year, and also hold lotteries in which a limited number of buyers are allowed to purchase dolls/kits.

You can also find them on eBay, and used dolls are often for sale in the market areas of the various BJD communities online. Keep in mind that most of these communities have some sort of probationary period for new members before they're allowed to access the sales threads.

Finally, you can use a service which allows you to purchase through Yahoo! Japan's auction area. Celga is one that comes immediately to mind (.celga.com). Be advised that these services charge fees, and can add a considerable amount to your total.
