Based on his past record, I do not think he can be elected, even if he is nominated, which also seems unlikely. He is not popular with Hispanics and Blacks. If he runs as an independent , he may win enough votes to throw the election to the Democratic candidate. However, no one can predict with certainty what could happen in the future.

By gaining the attention of a segment of the American public, it helps him not only rile up his base, but makes him appear trustworthy by spouting conspiracies that the majority of media won't report on excepting alt-right loon sites. It helps him weaken the power of mainstream media to hold him accountable, by constantly attacking their credibility.
Further, by attacking the credibility of government, it helps him control the conversation and steamroll weak government officials who play defense on the issues, much like he did to Hillary Clinton during the election.
Finally, he lies because to tell the truth would be:
- To admit to criminal wrongdoing.
- Counter to his brand of rich excess with no responsibility.
- Overall, not good for him.
Trump has gotten away with so many lies, why stop now? They've only improved his stature and vaulted him into the oval office. A man who benefits from telling a lie and suffers no significant consequence learns to do it again.
