One only has to see the pattern of his lifestyle to get a glimpse into the mind of Poe's reasoning's for this poem. #1 Even back in the 1800s, 13 years old was very young and a large age gap between Poe and his young bride Virginia so there was no doubt problems with her family and much gossip by neighbours and critics of Poe's writings was inevitable. #2 He then had to watch his beloved young wife suffer from tuberculosis from 1842 until her death in 1847. #3 One can certainly see that his young wife died in 1847 and Poe mourned her loss; he turned to alcohol until he died in 1849.
