Great question! I can do that, too, but never could describe it as well as you have. To the best of my knowledge, the effect is caused by the tiny muscles that control your eardrums. These muscles can tighten slightly in response to louder noises to protect your inner ear.

Why we have control over these muscles is unclear, but it IS clear that we usually cannot make them go loose or go tight. We can only make them "vibrate" between loose and tight at just the right speed to move the bones in the inner ear which, in turn, send a message to the brain that is interpreted as sound.
