Ferdinand Magellan was the first explorer to reach Asia by ship. This was important because he mapped out the route to Asia which opened up the trade of Asian goods.

The first Europeans known to travel around the world were those of Ferdinand Magellan's crew who survived, under the command of Juan Sebastian Elcano. Magellan was killed in the Philippines. His expedition of 273 men left Portugal in 1519, and only 18 returned in 1522.

According to one theory, the first person to travel around the world was Magellan's Malayan retainer/slave Enrique, who traveled to Portugal with his master, and was left off at Cebu in the Philippines. It is not certain, however, if he ever returned to his homeland of Malacca. (see related link)

Ferdinand Magellan was born in 1480 in Sabrosa, Portugal. He was 25 years old when he first set sail. It was a sea voyage bound for India in 1505.

Nothing really except proving the world is round which had already been done, discovering a way around the Americas, through the strait of Magellan, and he named the pacific ocean for its calm waters. His crew did bring spice back to Spain though but the spices were already discovered.

Ferdinand Magellan was the first explorer to circumnavigate the world. After departing Portugal, he sailed down the west coast of South America, south of the continent, then across to Southeast Asia. Magellan himself was killed in the Philippines, but one of his ships continued, crossing the Indian Ocean to Africa, sailing up the east coast to return to Portugal.

Specific parts of the world where Magellan explored extensively include India and the Far East. He was also the one who named the Pacific Ocean.

Francis Drake, 1577-1580, led second expedition to successfully circumnavigate the world, and the first expedition to do so successfully under one leader (Magellan had died before he was able to complete his circumnavigation).

Magellan "rediscovered" the Philippines. Magellan's main goal was to find the Spice Island, currently named Malaku Island. He accidentally "discovered" an island in Eastern Visayas, part of the Philippines, and was later killed in a neighboring island, Mactan. The significance of his expedition to find Spice Island was that he proved that the world is round.
