Fidel Castro and his forces overthrew the US friendly government in Cuba. He then declared Cuba a communist state and confiscated US assets. These two acts were seen as unacceptable by the United States, which was in a protracted "Cold" war with the Soviet Union and its Communist satellites and protectorates. Many Cubans, large numbers of the middle and upper middle class, fled Cuba for the United States. The United States then sponsored Cuban forces to return and overthrow Castro's government. The attempt was called "The Bay of Pigs" and was a resounding failure and embarrassment to the US government. To compound the tension the US government later found that the Soviet Union was in the process of installing Nuclear weapons pointing at the mainland United States on Cuba, thus beginning what is known in the US as "The Cuban Missile Crisis". The US blockaded Cuba and demanded that the USSR remove the missiles bringing the US & USSR very close to a nuclear war. The combination of these events, and the political strength of the Cuban exile community in Florida, where most settled, has hampered normalization of relations between the two ever since.

Fidel was as hard working man at the sugar cane fields. He became a lawyer and was friendly to everyone. When he became the favorite for the next election, Batista used the military to seize Cuba. Fidel was incarcerated and years later he brought the revolution and he took charge of Cuban. Since then he became crazy and irrational.

While it is true that the majority of Cubans supported Castro in 1959, as time went on a lot of Cubans became disenchanted with Castro's government and policies, but compared to Batista, Castro was gold.

Free education, free medical care, agrarian reform, quenching US imperialism all benefited peoples of Cuba immensely. Before Castro, 67% of Cubans were illiterate. Castro and Che introduced excellent education system and consequently, Cuba has made its people one of the most literate in Latin America.

Health care is better than that in USA for most people, and is absolutely free. Living span of Cubans is greater than that of US Americans.

Agrarian reform distributed land to those who worked it. Before Cuban revolution, land was owned by 1% of population, and billions of dollars were stolen by USA from impoverished Cuban populace. Castro was from wealthy family and his family plantation was also given to peasants.

Human development index jumped from low to one of the highest in the World.

Rights of blacks and mulatto population were equal in new Cuba, at a time when racist segregation in USA was still a harsh reality.

USA tried to strangulate Cuba by economic sanctions, but Europe and Soviet Union help free Cuban republic. But with downfall of Soviet Union, Cuba entered economic crisis.

The peasants, the poor, the workers, all the people that were fed up with Batista and wanted to see changes in the government's leaders, who were extremely corrupt. The youth of Cuba were among the strongest supporters of Castro's revolution.

Fidel was a lawyer. In 1952 Fidel Castro became a candidate for Congress for the Cuban People's Party and he was the favorite for the next election. But General Fulgencio Batista, with the support of the armed forces, took control of the country. Castro with 123 men and women attacked the Moncada Army Barracks. He was arrested was sentenced to fifteen years in prison. He was released after two years. Castro left for Mexico where he began to plan another attempt to overthrow the Cuban government.

After building up a stock of guns and ammunition, Castro, Che Guevara, Juan Almeida, and eighty other rebels arrived in Cuba in 1956. This group became known as the July 26 Movement and they made their base in the Sierra Maestra Mountains. As the history shows he did not used the military but instead he used revolutionaries. He came in power on the 1th of January 1959.

The only changes you could consider as positive during the Castro regime would be the fact the Cuba is now a leader in the medical field and that children are very well educated in any field that they show an aptitude for, at the governments expense. However they can not choose what that field that is, the government chooses for them.

On 19 Feb 2008 Castro announced he was stepping down as Cuba's president, he intends to continue to advice Cuba's political leaders.

Oppression and personalismo. The Cuban people have been denied a say in how to run their country. There is no freedom of speech, if you speak against Castro and /or his government you end up in prison on some made up pretext.

First the answer above is bull crap, they even spelled school wrong. I thought it was funny, so i left it there. Castro went from a capitalist party, to a Socialist party.

Actually he was his best enemy once Batista was killed when he was captured.

Sorry, i think you are asking a perfectly good question because after all "When did Fidel Castro EVER become a dictator?" He became Priminister of Cuba after leading a revolution against the dictator Batista. As soon as batista became dictator he discarded the Cuban constitution by only allowing staged elections which only himself could win. In 1959 Fidel Castro lead a revolution in which he overthrew Batistas Dictatorship. Therefore becoming Priminister and later in 1976 the Cuban President.
