Does a field hockey player always have to play with the stick in the right hand?

It depends on what kind of glove and why you wear it. If it is a protective glove, most people only wear one on the left hand. If it is a grip glove, you should wear the pair of them. Some like to add another protective glove to the right hand, some like to wear protection on the left and grip on the right and others just don't wear gloves at all. The same goes for goalkeepers, although you would be silly not to wear the 'gloves', as some people call the hand pads. You can also wear undergloves to help with gripping the stick and the pads; again, it is entirely the player's choice.

Is hockey a dumb game?

I don't think it is. Quite the contrary, especially having seen it being played in the Olympics (since the underwater cameras show what is going on under the water). It's a rough sport, and can be quite brutal.

Water polo is a full contact team sport which requires skill, stamina, technique and a lot of strength. It's a combination of other sports like football, soccer, hockey, basketball, and hockey (fights), but played in 20 feet of water.

This is the amazing part, because not only do the players have to know how to swim, they have keep their heads above water using a technique called "egg-beating" and they need the skill and strength to jump up with the ball (a fairly large and wet one) with one hand to be able to throw it to another team mate, or to try for the goal.

Unlike football, soccer, hockey or basketball, the sport is not one for little kids to start out playing in 'little leagues." The sport is not offered in schools until high school, because of the difficulty (skilled swimmers) and danger (drowning?).

Perhaps some may think it "dumb" or not be as popular as other sports because what looks harmless, or boring, on the surface, is because much of the action is under the water making it almost impossible to see what is going on, since a lot, a whole lot, happens under the water.

I found it fun to watch even without knowing many of the rules, and not being able to see all that was going on under the water. And because of all the pulling, grabbing, and tugging on each other's bathing suits, under the water, many naughty bits are exposed - so to protect the network from FCC fines or other sanctions they are very careful not to capture any of that on camera since much of the Olympics is live. (In fact, this year 2012, a woman's breast was exposed, though briefly, that NBC is considering a film delay so that, or worse, isn't shown on national TV again.

It depends n what forward but basically you hover around between the oppositions goal box and in front of the quarter of your goal box. If you are a wing stick t the sidelines so the halves can feed it out to you and if you are a centre forward try and feed it out to the wings so the can feed it back to you. HOPE THIS HELPS! If you need more complex to play a forward just ask!

When was Bauer hockey founded?

Where can you play hockey?

If you live in Europe, you can usually start playing field hockey at your primary school (grades kindergarten and up.) I don't live in Europe, so I will let someone else elaborate on that.

If you live in the USA (where I live), field hockey usually starts at the middle school/junior high level (grades 7-8). Depending on where you live, you can sometimes play as a recreational, "fun" kind of thing at a rec center or go to camps hosted by your local middle/high school. This is usually more common on the east coast and in California.

Once you begin playing more seriously, you can join a club. There can be any number of clubs in your area. With your club team, you play with others from all around your area, and you go to tournaments such as the Disney Field Hockey Showcase for U16 and U19 teams, held in February (there is also a Jr. Showcase held in July for U14), and National Field Hockey Festival (held over Thanksgiving, in November.)

Does a composite or wood hockey stick break easier?

Yes they do. And the reason why is because composite hockey sticks have flex usually at the middle part of the shaft or lower part of the shaft by the blade. A hockey stick flexing can be slighty compared to putting mashed potatoes on your spoon, pulling back, and letting it fly.

When is force summation used in field hockey?

You can apply force summation in a push pass by stepping in to hit the ball because when you step in you are allowing your bigger muscles to contribute to the hit as you will be using your heavy muscles, quadriceps and hamstring, and will be working your way up to your torso, shoulders, arm and through to your finger until you push the ball. This shows force summation :)

its quite a brief ish answer but i hope it helped and was off any use :)

How do you cut composite field hockey sticks?

Unless the top of the stick goes above your forehead when you're wearing skates, there is no reason to cut it. If it does, however, you may cut it the same way you would a player's stick according to the material of the stick (composite, fiberglass, or wood).

Hope this helped

How do you measure the bow on a field hockey stick?

There are a few minor restrictions on the dimensions of a stick, but the three that are mainly focused on are the width (the whole stick must be able to go through a ring with an internal diameter of 51mm), the length (most players have a stick between 35 and 38 inches long) and the bow (when the stick is played facedown on a flat surface), a prism or rod with a diameter of 25mm must not be able to pass under it at any point). There are various explanations of these regulations available at other questions on WA.

Did field hockey evolve from another sport?

No. Originally "field hockey" was not called that, as at the time of origin there was only one type of hockey with variations, played around the world. Outside of America and Canada field hockey is known by its original and formal name of hockey. It is only after the popular growth of ice hockey and roller hockey in North America that the word "field" was added to distinguish it.

What happens if you raise the ball in field hockey?

There are several situations in which the ball might be raised, and there are some general statements about what to do in most. Note that this is a long list, but by no means complete or exact. Only experience will help in applying the rules or ideas behind them.

Danger:

  • These statements always hold, no matter what.
  • If the ball is raised at or into another player, the player who raised it should be penalised appropriately.
  • If the ball is raised at or into another player, but the second player made no attempt to play the ball - i.e. just ran in the way - then they should be penalised instead.
  • A player with goalkeeping privileges does not count as "another player" for the purposes of having a ball raised at them.

From a free hit:

  • If the ball is raised directly from a free hit of any kind, in any way, it should be penalised. This should not be confused with first playing the ball in an autopass, then raising it.

Deliberately raising the ball:

  • If the ball is deliberately raised by a hit while in play, it should be penalised as this is directly against the rules.
  • The exception to the above is for a shot at goal. This is fully permitted.

The penalty corner:

  • The exception to this exception is for the first shot at a penalty corner, if that shot is a hit (a sweep or slap is a hit). The shot cannot enter or be on a path that will make it enter the goal at above 460 millimetres, but can go above this height while travelling there.
  • After the first shot has been played, any further shot is considered in the normal way.
  • Any flick as a shot at goal may be raised to any height. If a player is hit below the knee, this is the same as a foot. If they are within 5 metres and hit above the knee, the ball is raised dangerously. If they are outside 5 metres and hit anywhere on the body, then a penalty corner or stroke may be awarded as appropriate. This is the only exception to the "danger" statements.

The aerial ball/overhead pass:

  • A ball may be raised by a flick or scoop while in play. If the ball would land in a crowded area, the team who did not raise the ball is given a free hit where it was raised.
  • If there is a clear initial receiver, all opposing players must be 5 metres from them until the ball is controlled and on the ground.
  • If there is no clear initial receiver, a free hit is given to the team that did not raise the ball at the point it would have landed.
  • The goalkeeper may be the initial receiver. In this case, they are permitted to stop or deflect the ball in any way they usually would.

Could a field hockey ball hit you in the head hard enough to kill you?

Easily. Almost any player at men's grade (and many in women's grades) can hit the ball hard enough to do so - and there are also many players, especially at international level, who can push or flick the ball that fast - even if the victim is wearing head protection.
