Planes were not invented for war, but used in war. When the Wright brothers flew the first plane in 1903 it wasn't thought of as a machine for war. At first it was seen as a novelty. Wing walkers and performers would do stunts with early planes and mail was delivered by plane. As with any technology eventually it may be used in war. In the civil war hot air balloons were used for reconnaissance so it was a natural progression that the biplane was created for war.

There is more than one "worst" fighter jet...any jet that wasn't produced or was produced but not allowed into combat was probably a bad aircraft. Either not safe or not effective, or both. Looking at the question from another angle; if a jet was in combat, then it could not be placed in the "worst" jet category. During the Vietnam War, the F102 Delta Dagger and the F104 Starfighter each suffered about 14 losses before rotating back to the US. Both the 102 & 104 conducted CAS (Close Air Support/Strikes) for ground units in South Vietnam. Their bomb payloads (ordnance) were two to four bombs each jet; not very productive when compared to a Thunderchief or Phantom which could drop a dozen or two dozen bombs per aircraft...plus not get shot down so easily; So were the F102 and F104 some of the worst jets? No. They were good jets, just better fighters than bombers. So, the worst jets would be the ones that couldn't be trusted in battle.
