Do Fireflies Drink
No. fire flies don't drink
but they love "SEX"
Sometimes not even a day it varies anywhere from a half hour to a week although it is most likely that they will last about 5-24 hours
Well first of all most fireflies are not "lightning bugs" and fly in the day, but if you want to find fireflies night would be easier. In warmer places there are more fireflies, so if you live in a warm place like Florida you might want to try looking for those lightning bugs.
There are over 100 pecies of lightning bug or firefly. Different species of firefly have different flashing patterns so members of the same species can recognize each other from a distance. In most firefly species the males flash while flying and the females flash while perched on plants near the ground. When a male who is flying sees a flashing pattern that matches his species that is stationary and low, he'll fly over to it hoping to find a new girl friend.
Also called fireflies, as larvae they are specialized predators and feed on other larvae, terrestrial snails, and slugs. Some are so specialized that they have grooved mandibles that deliver digestive fluids directly to their prey.
The adult diet varies. Some are predatory, while others feed on plant pollen or nectar.
It does not produce or consume heat. It is "cold light"- bioluminescence
Get a flashlight! Flash it for a split second, then turn it off. Naturally, a firefly will see the flash and respond.
Luciferase, which is the bioluminescent enzyme in lightning bugs was used in medicine to help detect blood clots and locate tuberculosis virus cells. Today, scientists make synthetic luciferase.
They are out now, they come out from the ground. They like moist places with tall grass.
Fireflies are helpful to plants because they feed on many insects that are harmful to crops. The larvae even eat destructive pests like slugs.
Red-eared sliders only eat tad-poles,mealworms silkworms and smaller fish
Fireflies glow because they have different chemicals in their bodies. When combined, there's a chemical reaction and they glow.
To be more specific, cells in the firefly's abdomen produce luciferin and that creates luciferase, an enzyme. The luciferin combines with oxygen and forms oxyluciferin, which is inactive, but luciferase speeds up the reactions. Luciferin combines with ATP (adenosine triphosphate) and luciferyl adenylate and PP(pyrophosphate) are produced.
Oxygen and luciferyl adenylate mix to produce oxyluciferin and AMP (adenosine monophosphate). Finally, it starts to glow.
There are also uric acid crystals produced by the abdominal cells that help the light reflect away.
The known uses of bioluminescence in nature are
When a firefly poops, the amount is very miniscule. Many times it simply looks like a tiny black dot and is hard for a person to notice with just the naked eye.
Whether or not fireflies will appear on Long Island in New York this year is unknown. They were at one time found in huge numbers there but due to development and light pollution, they are disappearing quickly.
