Flea Markets, Thrift Stores, Yard and Garage Sales

Every week, especially weekends, people hold garage sales or yard sales. The purposes range from clearing out old belongings to raising a bit of cash. Millions of people also consign, sell, or buy at thrift stores and flea markets for second-hand goods and manufactured goods 'with flaws'. While yard and garage sales are deemed outdoor events, most flea markets and thrift stores use permanent indoor venues and often offer food and drink vendors. Whether buyer or seller, these venues give opportunities for spending--or making--quick cash.

How can you get someone to buy something in a yard sale?

Your pricing of the article has to be realistic, regardless of how great you think the object is. Most items go for less than 1/3 of the original selling price. You can check most things on eBay and then drop the price a dollar or two below that. Couches, beds and clothing make you money if you have lots of them to sell at a low price. Clothing displays can make a difference, too. The clothing needs to be freshly cleaned and folded or hung.

Clean all of the dust and any debris off of the item and make sure it works before trying to sell it. Few people will buy something with the idea of repairing it.

Answer

first of all, put up posters in large bold letters that tell people about your sale. Put them places where people and drivers can see.

Second, if you have some friends helping you out... they can put up some small stands in busy places where people can come and buy things from your mini stand...and then that friend selling at the mini stand could tell the people that bought at the mini stand to go buy at the main yard sale... which is probably your home.

ENJOY!!!

Can you sell food at a yard sale in texas?

I think you technically have to be licensed to sell prepared food and for liability reasons, I would not do it in any case. I could easily own your house if I wanted to and was a bad person if you sold me anything edible.

Does salvation army thrift stores drug test before hiring?

I worked for almost a year at a store in Mississippi. The manual stated that the policy was to drug test employees (already hired) who showed signs of being under the influence, with nothing about a preliminary test. I'm pretty sure that reflects the official policy (at least for the southeast, probably nationally). But I'm also pretty certain that an individual manager or director could decide to drug test at his or her discretion. They do do background checks.

What is the average revenue per square foot for thrift stores?

Hoover's online states about $40 - $100 per square foot on a thrift or resale shop. I don't know, however, if this is based on solely sales floor space or overall space in the store including backroom and inventory. I would guess usable sales floor space.

Where are the best flea markets in US?

national Sunday newspaper supplement's travel writer, Everett Potter, recently named the Daytona Flea and Farmer's Market year-round emporium among America's top five flea markets, joining an elite group including the Rose Bowl Flea Market in Pasadena, Calif., the Kane County Flea Market in St. Charles, Ill., and the Austin Country Flea Market in Texas. The greatest American flea market, Potter reported, was in Brimfield, Mass., with 5,000 dealers in 21 fields. While the Daytona Flea & Farmers Market is one-fifth that size, at peak times up to 50,000 patrons travel its 3 1/2 miles of aisles packed with merchandise mounds, produce piles, clothing collections, antiques, jewelry and eclectic stuff, like lucky bamboo and dreamcatchers.

Forget the Austin Country Flea Market- Whoever said that was a great Flea Market has never been here. Its all "New" crap from china~ tools, toys, Tejano mix tapes and Airbrushed Tupac sweatshirts. It has very little used "flea market" items. Bussey's in San Antonio is 1000x better.

Well, if you are in the CHICAGO area, WOLFF'S FLEA MARKET is great! They are open 6-3 Sundays April-October starting April 25, 2010 at the Allstate Arena in Rosemont. It's huge! 700 vendors with new items, old, antique, vintage, junk, produce, tools, sports memorabilia, gourmet food, bikes, clothing and more. Also indoors Sat & Sun 8-4 at 1775 N. Rand Rd., Palatine, IL at least through March 2011. Similar vendors. wolffs.com

Can you find rARE books at flea markets?

If you go to enough flea markets (or library sales, or church bazaars, or yard sales) and you know what to look for, eventually you will find a rare book or two. Everyone who does it enough has stories of great finds. But MOST rare books were purchased by collectors who knew they were getting a rare book. So most rare books come from previous collectors by way of antiquarian book dealers or auctions. The best source for buying rare books is through a member of a national or international trade organization of booksellers, such as the International League of Antiquarian Booksellers (ILAB). While you may find good books and good booksellers outside of ILAB, only members of trade organizations can offer guarantees of authenticity and ethics that go beyond their own business.

What is the law when pertaining to a license plate Does it need to be perfecly straight not on an angle If so why do they sell after market kits?

A license plate must be affixed to a vehicle as it was intended -- flat and level. This is so it can be easily read. After market kits don't have to be legal. Shops will sell you tint, plate covers and lights that are illegal in your state without informing you because it's up to you to know the law; they only want your money.

What are the advantages of exhibiting arts and crafts at shows rather than flea market type events?

When discussing advantages of one form over the other, you have to know what your goals are. If your goal is to sell your items as fast as possible, with the least amount of hassle, the flea market type would be best. However, the your selling price will be at rock bottom, since these are mostly for bargain hunters. When you exhibit at shows, you don't expect to sell the item directly off the exhibit rack, so to speak. Instead, you will probably get commissions from people who want an item made by you that meets their specific needs. Your art will be viewed by more people who appreciate it, and will probably sell for a much higher price than the other. An in between event would be the Arts and Crafts Fairs, where each participant has his own booth, and can sell items directly to the public. This is better than the flea market, because the visitors are looking for a higher quality item, and are willing to pay more. However, it is also time consuming for little profit, because the majority of visitors are browsers, and not buyers. My favorite kind of fair is the charity fair, where you donate items to be auctioned off to raise funds for the charity. I make the most money at this type of fair, and I donate all my proceeds to the charity, keeping only expenses. I prefer art shows, where the work is exhibited by the show organizer, and often judged for prizes. I have gotten many prizes, and commissions from these shows.

Why was Nykesha Sales' basket allowed?

Nykesha needed only one point to set UConn's career scoring record when she ruptured her Achilles tendon, ending her senior season prematurely. Her coach and Villanova's coach agreed on a plan to allow her to break the record. She hobbled onto the court with help, and after tip-off, the ball was passed to her under the basket so she could score. Villanova then inbounded and got a free basket, tying the game. Sales then sat down, and the game continued. Some people think this was a mockery of sports, while others feel that it was an act of good sportsmanship, since she would have shattered the record if she hadn't been injured.

Why is it called a flea market?

it come from the DS game called animal crossing: wild world HA......hardly, this is the answer I found many times over: Flea markets, where secondhand goods can be had cheaply, are not just an American phenomenon. In fact, the word "flea market'' has its origins in the name of a famous Parisian street market. The "Marche aux puces Saint-Ouen'' is a colorful market on the northern border of Paris that is a favorite stop for tourists and locals alike. In the winding alleyways that make up the Marche shoppers can hone their haggling skills and perhaps find a rarity among the booths and tables. The Marche aux puces has been in operation for more than a century. Francophones know that the French phrase "marche aux puces'' literally translates to "flea market.'' George Dougherty wrote in his 1922 book In Europe that the Marche aux puces "is called the 'Flea' Market because there are so many second hand articles sold of all kinds that they are believed to gather fleas.'' Whether Doughtery was merely parroting Parisian folklore or relating the actual etymology behind the French name, his use of "flea market'' to describe the street market is the first known example of this term in English. The term didn't begin popping up with any real frequency until the 1950s. At that time, it was usually used to refer to markets of this type in Paris, Spain and elsewhere in Europe. During the 1960s, however, it began to be applied more frequently to such gatherings in the United States.
