What is a wog fly?

, Where I come from, the PNW, "wog fly" is short for polliwog (pollywog to some) fly tied to imitate the larval stage of a toad or frog. The "wog fly" is often used by fly fishermen to catch steelhead or salmon (especially coho salmon). The resultant commotion in the water attracts the attention of nearby fish.

Are all the flies in the house dying suddenly a sign or omen of any kind?

Not all naturally occurring phenomenon can or should be interpreted as omens.

In this case I'm inclined to think you are observing a yearly event. As the weather gets colder, flies tend to try to find a way to stay warm. If they get indoors they can go dormant over the winter, appearing dead. Or they may die of natural causes, their life cycle is no where near as long as ours. The other possibility is that there is an insecticide at work here, people often forget they have put up things like "no-pest-strips' and then are surprised at the number of little bodies that appear on windowsills etc.

Are you sure you want to know? They eat the dead flakes of skin that constitute dust, they eat the invisible mould from around your toilet, they eat your dogs faeces before they lay their eggs in it, THEN... they land on your dinner plate and eat your food! HOW they eat is another matter. They vomit up a nasty solvent-like phlegm onto their food, which dissolves it into a liquid. Then they suck up the liquid through their probosis, which is like a long straw. It is fascinating to watch, but also incredibly repulsive, especially when it happens to your dinner! Sorry. You asked!
