The song was written by Leslie Bricusse and Anthony Newley for their second musical The Roar of the Greasepaint - the Smell of the Crowd. The original British cast was led by Norman Wisdom. Ct Grant was cast as The Negro and it was he who performed the song Feeling Good. The show had its pre-London tour through Nottingham, Liverpool and Manchester, between 10 August and 3 October 1964.
