Who is Lucy nightingale?

Founder of SL Volunteers.

After Graduating from University in 2008, Lucy Nightingale struggled to find employment. With the recession in full swing and graduate unemployment at a high, Lucy dreamed of escaping the country and leaving the doom and gloom behind.

"The idea of idly travelling the globe, hopping from beach to beach did sound tempting, but I feared it would not make my employment situation any better when I inevitably returned. Volunteer teaching seemed a better option, as it offered me the opportunity to experience another culture and at the same gain experience and skills.

But with the VSO and UN Volunteers being over subscribed and often requesting PHD qualifications, I turned to the more commercial volunteer organisations but failed to find a placement that was within my ever-decreasing budget. My dream was temporarily put on hold.

Over the course of 2 years, I found that I was not alone in my aspirations and in May 2010, myself and a team of fellow graduates from Manchester University set off to Sri Lanka to set up our own volunteer organisation, 'SL Volunteers'. Our objective: to offer placements that would give other graduates skills training and experience, at an ethical price. Over 2 months we worked with NGOS, charities and local social workers that introduced us to projects that would benefit from foreign volunteers. Additionally, the Sri Lankan Social and Charity workers agreed to train all of our future volunteers to work effectively and sensitively with beneficiaries with regards to the social and cultural context.

Since launching in May, 'SL Volunteers' has received just over 50 graduates and students to teach English at children's homes and community centres, run activities at special needs centres and coach sport.
