Drake spent the majority of his circumnavigation voyage as a campaign against Spain, wresting treasure from Spanish ports and ships in the southeastern Pacific. After weather necessitated a return from his initial sailing (November 15, 1577), he traveled from Plymouth, England to the Cape Verde Islands off western Africa, capturing the Spanish ship Santa Maria (January, 1578) and enlisting its Portugese captain, Nuno de Silva. Crossing the Atlantic, Drake sailed southward to Patagonia (June, 1578). This was winter in the Southern Hemisphere, and it was not until late August that Drake attempted to sail the Straits of Magellan, arriving in the Pacific in September with but a single ship (the last small ship that survived the Atlantic crossing sank, and the second large ship became separated from Drake's own and returned to England). During the remainder of 1578 and into 1579, he raided Spanish ports along the Chilean and Peruvian coastline. Eventually he seized a load of treasure from a Spanish ship, and in June arrived at Point Loma (now San Diego, California). After a short period in San Francisco Bay, he sailed across the Pacific (July to October, 1579), passing through the Philippines and stopping in Indonesia in November. Drake returned to England via Java, the Indian Ocean, and around the Cape of Good Hope, arriving in Sierra Leone on July 22, 1580. His expedition returned to England on September 26, 1580 after a voyage totalling over 34 months.
