He is actually Ed and Al's older brother. On the last few episodes, he shows his really face and it looks alot like Ed's dad's face.

But in Fullmetal Alchemist envy is not a the brother he is this really weird creature that is green and has head sticking out of him...

The most central theme for Full Metal Alchemist has to be family. Their adventrue starts with the Elric brothers trying to ressurect their dead mother, using the powers so reminiscent of their father Hohenheim. After Ed loses his arm and leg and Alfonse loses his body the pair set off on their Journey for each other. Every adventure they have is due to their need to make each other 'whole again'.

As for genre (in case that's what you meant) it probably falls into an action/fantasy/comedy type role. Each of those are applicable in it's own right.
