A two phase furnace includes 2 types of heat. Usually it is composed of an electric heat pump and also a nat. gas/ propane heat source when the temperature drops below a set range. The reason they use these is because heat pumps are very efficient when there's not a large temperature change required, but they're efficiency drops dramatically when the outside temperature (or ground temperature) drops below freezing.

The only other two-phase furnace would be a two-phase electric (as opposed to a three-phase electrical furnace.) But I don't think you're asking about 2 vs 3 phase electrical furnace systems... Those are quite rare.

Furnace should have an on off switch near it. Turn it off. Turn wall thermostat off.

Air filter screens are flat and wide. Typically they slide into the side of your furnace. Some slide in the inside at the large opening where the air flows, and some slide on the outside. Take a flash light and look for a long slot where the unit's filter would slide in. Pull the old one out if it has one.

Inspect it. If it is dirty replace it with the correct fit for your unit. If the furnace is hardly ever used, then it should appear clean. New filters trap dirt, dust, or allergens. Pick one that suits your need. If the unit is not used for a while, then of course, it may be clean. Replace as needed.

Some homes have large ceiling or wall vents with filters behind them. Normally, you will see tabs for opening the grille to install a filter.

A dirty filter will stop air from being blown. A filter is needed to keep dust and dirt out of critical areas of your equipment. Saving you hundreds of dollars in replacement or repair of the unit.

Ours uses 5gallons per day. To calculate yours take how much is the tank and divide it by how long it lasts. Our 150/30=5 and another example 350/60=5.83. These are good for estimating for the exacts check your manual.

3. Turn off the main breaker
4. After turning off the main breaker disconnect the power line to the furnace

There is probably a thermostatic control somewhere that shuts it down when some temperature limit is reached, and on again when the temperature gets too low. Alternatively there might be a fault which shows up when the furnace gets too hot.

Don't try to do it yourself. Be safe and try to get a furnace technician to help reignite the oil/diesel furnace from a company that specialises in furnace repair instead.

Set thermostat to desired temperature; lets say, 70 degrees Fahrenheit, a few seconds will go by then the furnace should activate. Once the furnace heats the room to the set temperature the furnace should shut off.

If both fireplace and furnace are BOTH gas, if the flue has the correct size, AND if your building code permits, yes. If furnace and fireplace are different fuels, no. Check with your local building inspection department.
