The Canis Major Dwarf Galaxy is currently considered to be the closest galaxy to the Milky Way. It is 25,000 light years from our solar system and 42,000 light years from the center of the Milky Way. Its status as a galaxy is still disputed in some scientific circles. If the Canis Major Dwarf Galaxy loses its galaxy status, then the Sagittarius Dwarf Spheroidal Galaxy would reacquire the title as the Milky Way's closest neighbor. It is it is roughly 50,000 light years from the center of the Milky Way.

Given the "error of measurement" inherent in such large distances, yes. If you dig down, though, the galaxy doesn't have a sharp, clear 'edge'....so the 100,000LY number is just an accepted estimate since nobody really knows how to make it more precise with our current technologies.

We have really not explored the Milky Way galaxy in sufficient detail to be able to give any confident answer to that question. If you wanted to know how many artificial satellites there are in orbit around the planet Earth, that question can be answered. Whether there are other planets in the galaxy which also have artificial satellites, we really cannot say.
