Wikipedia does NOT state that he was fired. He was on Family Feud from 1976-1985, when it was cancelled, and then again from 1994-1995 for another incarnation of the show, when it was apparently cancelled due to ratings. He was offered the chance to return again in 1999, but declined.

There has not been any confirmation about the salary of the Eggheads. One source states that they receive £400 per episode (for a series of 20 episodes) but others say it depends on their amount of questions they answer correctly.
It would make sense for their salary to be at least somewhat based on the amount of questions answered correctly/rounds won, to add to the competition - they would be spurred on by the motivation of money.
You should also remember that being on the Eggheads is not the sole occupation of any of the Eggheads, with many pursuing other activities and quiz show competitions.
