When talking about the precious stone, the word Garnet is derived from middle English and means "dark red". Otherwise, the meaning of the name Garnet is serious-minded, responsible, and stable.
Garnet is a mineral, of the Al SiO3 community, with other contributions as well. Some times used as a minor gemstone. A cubic mineral, found often enough in metamorphosed rocks such as schist.
Mined in the rock, or alluvially [ in stream beds ]. Alluvial gems are washed out by erosin or previous mining activity.
Garnet stones vary in price depending on the stone size, setting and clarity. A cheap stone could cost you as little as £5 whereas a large, valuable stone could cost as much as £4000.
The luster of garnet is glassy because when you hold it up into the sunlight it will shine like glass.
The prices of garnets vary greatly. Red garnet or pyrope garnet is more plentiful than other garnet species, so it is quite cheap. Retail prices can range from $3 to $50 per carat. Mandarin garnet and travorite garnet are extremely rare garnet varieties, especially in large size. Retail prices of top-grade stones can be as high as $1500 to $3000 per carat.
Sandpaper is made with corundum because it is extremely hard (9 on the Moh's Scale of Hardness) compared to just about anything else, except diamond (which top the scale at 10). This "hardness" is basically the factor which determines what happens when scraped against another material. If the corundum in the sandpaper is harder than whatever you are rubbing it against, then it will scratch the surface. If the sandpaper is used on something harder than corundum, the sandpaper will not be able to leave abrasions. Corundum is used because there are very few materials which it will fail to scratch.

It is told that garnet holds not only the power to protect it's wearer from negative energies, but to send those negative energies back to where they originated from. If you are suffering from malicious gossip and lies, wearing a garnet will send the negative vibrations directly back to those perpetrating them. Whenever you hear or feel negative remarks, place the garnet between the trouble makers and yourself; the rebound will most assuredly go unnoticed until they suffer from the results.
A garnet is usually a pin that you can pin to your clothing
A Pagan Perspective
The most common use of a garnet (magically) it as a gift between friends, usually at parting. It assures the two people that they will see one another again.
Garnets come is almost every color of the rainbow. Typically, we think of garnets as deep red but there are many other types. Mandarine garnets are more golden orange is tone. Rhodolite garnets are in pink and purple tones. Tsavorite garnets are green. Spessartite garnets are sunset colors of reddish orange.
There are some deposits of garnet stones on the east coast -- I believe it is one or both of the Carolinas.
The best garnets - star garnets - are found in India and North Idaho near the town of Emida (about 70 minutes south of Coeur d'Alene, Idaho). You can dig them yourself outside the commercial digging spots, or some of the commercial spots (there are only 2or 3 at the most) will rent you a shovel and sieve for a day for a low fee. The garnets are found in the banks of Emerald Creek, but smaller, sand-size garnets are found in several drainages in that mountainous area.
After the start garnets are polishes, you can clear see a weird structure in them that is in the shape of a six-legged star. Some of them are gorgeous. I have seen some of these garnets that are the size of a small walnut. They sell for quite a bit of money.
Also, these garnets are part of the reason that Idaho is called the Gem State. There are also deposits of high quality opal, and beryl is mined commercially over the mountain ridge south of the garnet location.
