In the wild, gerbils do hibernate. Gerbils kept as pets will also hibernate if the temperature of the room they are kept in drops. But, domesticated gerbils will not be able to hibernate without dying or becoming sick.

You must first have all the supplies for them, such as the basics of a:

cage

water bottle

food dish

FOOD

bedding

running wheel

P.S. have either a wire mesh or solid wheel, because plain wire wheels or lined wheels will catch their feet/tail and injure the little guys!

In general, it is better to have two guinea pigs than one because these are social animals that normally form communities in the wild (yes, there are wild guinea pigs). Well yeah, that's like pulling your arm off. But it doesn't hurt to where its extreme pain because its natural. Predators like hawks grab gerbils by their tails and the gerbil releases half of it. It never grows back though.

Gerbils have sleepy-dust too, so when they produce a lot, it sometimes sticks their lids together for a while. If the lids don't un-stick for quite a long time, I would thoroughly advise taking to the vet for a check.

Not quite sure what you're asking, but rodents produce a red mucus called porphyrin that scares many owners into thinking they are bleeding from their eyes or nose. This can be caused by illnesses such as an upper respiratory infection, which can be deadly if it goes untreated; or something as simple as a stressor in the environment, such as using the wrong bedding (pine and cedar are NOT recommended for any rodent) or even just adjusting to new smells in the environment.

If your gerbil develops this, make sure you are using proper bedding (aspen and Carefresh are highly recommended), and be sure the gerbil is not having labored breathing (rapidly heaving sides) or clogged passages (if you hold them up to your ear, they would make a clicking sound as they try to breathe), as these are signs of a respiratory infection. This can be treated over the counter using doxycycline, which should be available at local pet stores in the bird section--use dose for small birds. It is also advisable to take your gerbil to the vet, as they will be able to give you a better diagnosis and better medication for treatment.
