The reason the LDS Church has not excommunicated Beck is because it only doles out sentences of excommunication for political views that challenge the stated political positions of the Church. If you engage in inflammatory political speech that does not attack the Church, no matter how much harm you cause to others, you will probably be left alone and not face any Church sanctions. However, if you start promoting a political ideology that is at odds with the Church's stance on anything (feminism, gay rights, etc.), then you will likely face disfellowshipping, if not excommunication.

Sadly, sometimes drug addictions can have lasting affects that can happen after the addiction is beaten. These include an inability to concentrate on one topic for period of time, an unwarranted sense of paranoia, a "messiah" complex in which one thinks they can save the world, and certain unexplained social behaviors, such as for no apparent reason giggling in the middle of a conservation. Often recovering addicts have "tunnel vision" in which they may believe so much in a theory that they "spin" true facts or simply fabricate "facts" to fit their theory.
