Grizzly Bears

The bear is what is known as an apex predator; it preys upon other animals but no other animal preys upon the bear (not counting parasites; bears can have ticks, for example, which eat part of the bear, but not the whole bear). Of course, bears do not live forever, and when they die, lots of other animals can eat them. But no animal kills bears to eat them, not counting humans (bear paws are considered a delicacy in China).

Although the grizzly bear is California's state animal, there are not many left in this state. It is reported that there may be about 20 bears in the California ecosystem. In some other states, there may be about 1,800 grizzly bears left in the wild.

They eat mostly fish, deer, moose, caribou, bison, goats, sheep, carrion, berries, grubs, grain, grass, etc.
Any they can get a hold of. Although grizzlies are classified as carnivores, they are omnivores since their diet consists of both plants and animals. Of course grizzly bears come in contact with black bears. Grizzlies tend to inhabit more open areas, and black bears tends towards forested areas, but their ranges do overlap. Black bears evolved in the presence of grizzly bears due to their ability to climb trees, and their tendency to stay near mature forest trees.

Black bears become more vulnerable to grizzly attacks when they venture too far into open grizzly territory, or when grizzlies explore black bear areas looking for food. This could occur after a forest fire creates an explosion of high calorie, ground cover and brush, for example.

Grizzly predation on black bears occurred in Yellowstone Park at a number of sites: Hoodoo creek, Dave Adams Hill, Grizzly Overlook, and Pilgrim Creek. They took place from 1990 to 2005, indicating this is normal behaviour.

The largest carnivore on North American soil is the polar bear. Orcas, which live in the ocean, are larger than polar bears but they don't live on land so they don't count.
