The Christian holiday of Candlemas falls on February Second. Many traditions relting to Candlemas purport to predict the remaining time until spring. some of these relat to groundhogs, bot others to bears and marmots. So it seems likely that Groundhog day being of February 2nd derives from German settlers' in Pennsylvania and how they treated Candlemas
In the religions of Judaism, Christianity, and Islam, the end of times will come when God deems it so. In the realms of science, a plethora of possibilities could happen to wipe all life off the planet but are just as unknown as to when they would strike. Nobody would be ready when it comes.

Usually they coax him out with food, but they have also had to dig him up before because Phil refused to come out.
it looks like a furry little creature.it has lot of fur around it.
ANS2:There is a picture of Punxsutawney Phil (the one without the hat) at the link below. He is one of the more famous groundhogs.i remember AMC did a storyline on this and the director of Groundhog Day said it was supposed to be 10,000 days that the Phil Connor character spent on that day.
Punxsutawney is the site of the "Groundhog Day" festivities.
According to the Stormfax Almanac, which has been tracking Phil's predictions since 1887, Phil has been correct only 39% of the time. You'd be better off flipping a coin than going by the groundhog's predictions for an early Spring.
The significance of this holiday is just to see how long winter will last. This is only for entertainment purpose and weather centers sometimes predict differently than the groundhog. Hope this helps!
