To become lead guitarist in a band, you need to be the best guitarist of the group.

Not true. In order to be a lead guitarist, you must have at least a basic understanding of music theory. You can play any lick you want, but if it does not fit, it will sound horrible.

Actually, you must be the most skilled LEAD guitarist in the group. That means a skill at hitting individual notes cleanly, with feeling, and with speed. You must be able to transition between scales easily, and improvise occasionally. This is different than being the rhythm guitarist which involves keeping steady time, knowing your chord theory, playing all the notes in a chord cleanly, and making complex rhythms and changes within a chord with one hand while playing out a complex rhythm with your right hand.

Keep in mind that the vintage guitar market is very fickle - while the value probably wont change much but it will go up and down over time.

I know that Hole did a cover of that song on their Unplugged album and a pretty good 60s band called Vanilla Fudge did, too. (Hole, as crazy as it seems, was better - in my opinion.) Misfits had a song by that name, but I don't think it's the same song.

Al Kooper and Stephen Stills did a long version of Season of the Witch on the Super Session album, released about 1969 - great wah-wah work by Stills, Kooper did the vocals. There is a related live version by Kooper and Mike Bloomfield on guitar, from their Live at the Fillmore East record.

If you watch the video, Bryan Adams is also playing in the video (he co wrote the song with Jim Vallence), but the lead guiltarist, credited on wikipedia, is Aldo Nova, who played with Joe Cocker. For a rhythm guitarist, he must pitch the steady rhythm of the song, while putting a chord that fits the song and mood in the background. The lead guitar follows along with the rhythm guitarist on little riffs, or single note patterns until he takes a solo in the middle of the song somewhere. He can also add solos tastefully along the way that add to the feel of the song.
