I don't know how you mean losing hair, if sheding is what your talking about, I'm not sure if the hamster might be sick or not, but if it is coming out in clumps and/or leaving red patches or irritated skin then I'd take Mr. Hamster directly to a vet. ASAP It could be something simple but I've found from my own experience, if someting is moving quickly with your animal, you need to move quickly.

Put a exercise wheel in his cage. Put a good bedding down, they love to be able to bury in the bedding. Just for some extra information, try to use warm water (not too hot, but not cold), and also as soon as you are done washing the hamster, put it in a warm towel to dry. Not really because first it would have to be tamed so that it could easily be held without it biting or trying to escape, and hamsters are nocturnal so they are not meant to be woken in the daytime, so if they are woken in the daytime this could lead to stress.
