The Philosopher's Stone exists as a real life legend and is not an invention of J.K. Rowling. Nicholas Flamel was also a real alchemist who was connected to the stone - although he did not live to be over 600 years old.

In the US, the book and movie were re-titled Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone as the US publisher did not think that American would know the word "Philosopher" and felt that "Sorcerer" sounded more exciting. J.K. Rowling has said she would have fought this change had she been in a better position at the time.
