What is the average life expectancy of a domesticated African Pygmy hedgehog?
3 to 8 years is the average. However for it to reach 8 years old, it must be cleaned at least 3 times a week and always have food and water available.
What is the best brand of cat food to feed your hedgehog?
There is a lot of debate about "what food is best".
Hollistic, organic, and all natural foods are always best. Don't buy food with by-product meal in it. You want the protein to be above 30%, and the fat to be 12% or below. If your hedgehog has trouble keeping on weight, you might try a food with higher fat content, like BlueBuffalo healthy living adult (chicken/rice) which has 18% fat content.
You might want to check out Spikes Delite as well.
there are a few kinds of hedge hog. some are African and some are European.

What supplies do you need for a hedgehog?
I recommend an absolute minimum of 2.5 square feet of free floor space. This means 2.5 square feet NOT including the wheel, litter pan, food dish, etc. Each animal will need a different cage, as hedgehogs are solitary creatures.
You'll need litter for the cage. NO CEDAR! Pine shavings/pellets are the most commonly used litter choices. I don't suggest care fresh.
Since hedgehogs are for the most part nocturnal creatures, they will need a private place to sleep during the day. Sleeping bags are best for this. They will also require a wheel (with a solid running floor, no mesh or bars), a water bottle, a food dish, and a litter pan (corner box for ferrets) is a great idea.
You will need high quality cat kibble as a main diet. Something with no by-products, and with around 30% protein / less than 15% fat is best. You will also need to supplement their diet with treats, such as mealworms, wax worms, silk worms, crickets, cooked unseasoned meats, eggs, fruits and berries, as well as vegetables. Visit the related link for a list of unsafe treats.
You will also need baby shampoo, fingernail clippers, and a soft bristle toothbrush for outward care. You will also need a way to keep them at a temperature of 70-78 degrees F - safe snuggle disks or small room heaters work well.
