What happens when you give a baby honey?

You shouldn't give a baby honey.

Firstly, the baby's digestive system is not really developed enough to cope with a large amount of sugar -- and honey is almost all sugar.

Secondly, there is a risk, albeit extremely small, that the honey is carrying the bacterium Clostridium botulinum. This will not be in sufficient quantity to have any serious effect on an adult or older child, but could very seriously affect a baby whose immune system is not sufficiently developed to deal with it.

This is why in some countries and states honey is labelled 'Not to be given to children under 12 months'

Bees in the Bible

Danger of their attacks

The Bible is talking about the danger of the attacks by bees

Deuteronomy 1:44

"And the Amorites who dwelt in that mountain came out against you and chased you as bees do, and drove you back from Seir to Hormah."

Psalm 118:12

"They surrounded me like bees; They were quenched like a fire of thorns; For in the name of the LORD I will destroy them."

Could bees live in a cadaver?

It is something very interesting to know that the Bible says that the bees established their colonies inside a cadaver of a lion and made honey.

Judges 14:8

"After some time, when he returned to get her, he turned aside to see the carcass of the lion. And behold, a swarm of bees and honey were in the carcass of the lion."

As far as I know, bees NEVER do that and never make their colonies inside a cadaver of any animal. We know that bees are very clean and can not live inside a putrefied cadaver.

How do they take honey out of a beehive?

If the bees are kept in a hive, they build their comb onto frames and fill the comb with honey. An extractor is used to get the honey out of the comb. An extractor spins the frames and forces the honey out of the comb and against the walls of the extractor. It can then be filtered and eaten. They also use harmless smoke on the bees so they stay out of the way and don't sting the beekeepers.

How many cups of sugar equals a cup of honey?

Honey does contain sugar: fructose and maltose if I remember correctly but not sucrose (the kind of sugar we get from sugar cane and that you buy as sugar). Fructose etc are just as fattening and tooth destroying as sucrose. It is however sweeter so if you are adding it for sweetness add about half as much honey as you would cane sugar. In some recipes sugar is there for structure so honey being liquid may not be suitable

What is set honey?

A set honey is simply one where the sugars have crystalised to form a more solid mass.

Honey is a saturated solution of sugars, mainly a mixture of glucose and fructose, the balance of which depends on the flowers on which the bees have been foraging.

All honey will crystalise, or set, eventually, but the higher the percentage of glucose the quicker the honey will set.

Africanized honey bees escaped from a research facility in Brazil about 50 years ago and since then have spread steadily northwards through South America and Central America. What is the diffrence between acacia honey and regular honey?

All honey has different flavours depending on the type of flowers from which bees source the nectar to manufacture their honey.

The best way to discover which honey you prefer - because flavour is such a subjective sensation - is to sample various honeys and see which you like best. Do this whenever you have the opportunity: our tastes change and mature over time.

It might be good to taste honey without considering marketing claims made by the people selling the honey! Compared with the rest of our diet we eat so little honey overall that it won't make much difference to our health no matter what they tell you.

Can honey dry?

If kept in a warm, very dry atmosphere: perhaps. Under normal circumstances honey is very unlikely to dry out. It will crystalize -- all honey will do that sooner or later -- but honey is naturally hygroscopic, that is, it will absorb water from the air so if left uncovered it is more likely to gradually dilute itself rather than dry out.

What types of honey are there in the world?

Information from the National Honey Board:

There are more than 300 unique types of honey. Each type of honey originates from a different type of flower or plant. Honey color ranges from almost clear, like water, to dark brown, like mollassas. Generally, lighter honey has a milder taste than darker honey.

Some common examples of honey types are: alfalfa, avocado, Clover, sage, tupelo, and wildflower.

Honey is divided into four general categories:

  • Comb Honey - Stored naturally in a hive by bees.
  • Liquid Honey - Extracted from comb honey by centrifugal force (spin really fast).
  • Creamed Honey - Blending of one part finely granulated honey with nine parts liquid honey.
  • Chunk Honey - Beeswax comb in a jar with liquid honey poured over it.

The honey has a pearl like color and a buttery taste and texture. The white honey market was started by Richard Spiegel, a lawyer that started a new career as a beekeeper in Hawaii.
