What is being done to help wild horses?
The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) does occasional round ups and puts them up for adoption. For more info go to the BLM's official website. Google It.
BLM helps the horses by having multiple sights of acreage for the horses to live on and they do not send them to the slaughter house. They also have sale/ adoption days where they will round up all the horses and let people buy them if they have an approved living place for their new mustang. But they also have the 3 sale rule where if a horse has gone through the sales/ adoption days 3 times without being adopted, they are allowed to be bought be slaughter houses (as terrible as it is they do this).
The approved living space for the wild mustang has qualifications, but a few are a fence that is 6 feet tall with no electric or barbed wire, a 3 walled shelter to protect the horse from bad weather, and the suggested space/ maximum area to put your horse in is a round pen (it would be terribly hard to catch a wild horse in your big pasture.)

What causes an abcess on a horse's hoof?
For many years, it was thought that a tiny piece of rock or gravel entered through the bottom of the horses hoof, got lodged in there and caused an abcess. It's now known that is not true. An abcess is nothing more than a pocket of pus (infection) caused by a puncture wound. However, many people still refer to abcesses as "gravel". Often the puncture wound can be so tiny that you cannot see it. Because of what a horse walks on, all hoof wounds are contaminated and often get infections, which causes the abcess. Because these infections usually can't drain out from the sole of the hoof, the pus will travel the path of least resistance, travel up the hoof until it blows out and drains at the coronary band. This can take anywhere from a few days to many weeks. The horse will be in pain, (often severe pain), until this happens. Rather than wait for the abcess to blow out at the coronary band, it is much better if you call your vet or farrier. They can usually locate the abcess with hoof testers and will often pare out the pocket of infection with a hoof knife. (NEVER try this yourself!) This will help the wound to drain and will give your horse some measure of immediate relief by releasing some of the painful pressure the abcess was causing deep inside the hoof. This will also help tremendously in the speed of healing. Once the abcess has been cut out, your vet or farrier will advise you how to clean and care for the wound until it has properly healed.

When leading a horse should you walk directly in front of it?
Answer 1:
No you should not walk directly in front of your horse. They can accidentally knock you down or step on you. You should walk at their shoulder. It will allow both of you to see where you are going and what rocks or holes and things like that are in front of you.
Answer 2:
No, when you are leading a horse you always lead on the left. The reason you should lead on the left instead of directly in front is because the horse needs to learn directions. But when you are in tight areas it is perfectly fine to walk directly in front of it, but make sure you are watching the horse while leading in front. It could rear up or bit by something like a fly and go crazy.
Answer 3: (Supervisor answer)
Horses have 2 blind spots, one of those is directly in front of it's nose, and the other is right behind it's tail. Therefore if you are directly in front of it, the horse cannot see you to know where to go. That means you should stand near the shoulder of the horse, on the left or right side. Many people only lead from the left side as this is tradition, but it is acceptable and considered good training practice to lead he horse from the right also.
