hybrids have a part-battery part-gasoline engine. when hybrids slow to a certain speed the battery part takes over and the gas part shuts down. when you accelerate to a certain speed the gas engine takes over. but you can go any where from 50-75 miles on a single charge, so hybrids aren't really all that great for road trips, just around town. they're bascially a waste of taxpayers' time and money.

and non-hybrids have a battery too but that one helps with all the electrical parts of the vehicle. no matter how fast or slow you go the gas engine remains running and you can go 100s of 1000s of miles with that battery. and it usually costs around $12-20 to replace these, whereas hybrid battery packs cost $2500, almost as much as a transmission replacement.

An SUV is still one of the most beloved cars in America. People love buying an SUV due to their spacious interior and ability to carry a heavy load. The only bad aspect of an SUV is that it requires a lot of gas. People spend hundreds of dollars in any given week in filling up the gas tank of an SUV. The Ford Escape Hybrid can save you a lot of money on gasoline.

It truly depends on how much you drive the car and what the mpg is. You also have to figure that the mpg changes everytime you go up a hill or down a hill, go in town, or go on the highway. So back to what I origanly said, it truthfully depends on how much you drive the car.

Go to your cars manufacture site and look up your car and see what the estimated mpg is and calculate that by your total miles a gas tank (figuring that is 2 weeks) now times that by 26. That's about all I can think of. Hope this is helpful.

While not really good for the environment, they do save some fuel. The overall cost per mile is not much higher then a conventional car. The pollution issue is possibly greater as their lives are shorter. The primary cause of pollution for automobiles is the junking of them.

Keeping the same car longer and keeping it running well is far better then buying a new hybrid.

Actually hybrid cars have been on the market for such a short time that is not possible yet to really compare how long they last to standard cars. Most people who own hybrid cars have not yet owned them as long as the typical lifetime of a non-hybrid car. So far there is little or no evidence that they wear out any sooner than normal cars - but only time will tell.

The VW Jetta gets 39 city and 51 highway with no extra pollution created in the making of the extra electronics and batteries. California tested the car and averaged 48 MPG using their standards.

There are cars that are coming out soon that will blow away these hybrids as far as mileage.

Overall the hybrids are probably not as bad for the environment as a mid size car. The small diesel and gas cars blow them away though for overall environmental friendly. You will lose though, in the status department of the feel good crowd.

Diesels cost allot less than hybrids and last longer and always will. They don't emit acid like gas powered hybrids. In Europe diesels became much more common than hybrids because there cheaper. There is also diesel run hybrids now that get even better mileage.

My hybrid has a special battery and when I bought it I was warned not to jump it or let anyone but the dealership work with it. The car uses the battery in a different way than the normal battery and will switch from gas to battery operation to save gas. It charges while I drive it and as I break.

Hybrid cars are so much better than gas cars for a lot of reasons. The main reason people decide to make the switch to hybrid cars is for the savings on gas. When you drive around in a new hybrid car, you will be able to save hundreds of dollars on gas in a given week.

The cost verses the mileage makes these cars a bad deal at present. Maintenance issues with the batteries and now with Toyota's braking issue, the demand will probably go down.
