What does mentally retarded mean?
Medical Encyclopedia: Mental Retardation
Definition
Mental retardation is a developmental disability that first appears in children under the age of 18. It is defined as an intellectual functioning level (as measured by standard tests for intelligence quotient) that is well below average and significant limitations in daily living skills (adaptive functioning).
Description
Mental retardation occurs in 2.5-3% of the general population. About 6-7.5 million mentally retarded individuals live in the United States alone. Mental retardation begins in childhood or adolescence before the age of 18. In most cases, it persists throughout adulthood. A diagnosis of mental retardation is made if an individual has an intellectual functioning level well below average and significant limitations in two or more adaptive skill areas. Intellectual functioning level is defined by standardized tests that measure the ability to reason in terms of mental age (intelligence quotient or IQ). Mental retardation is defined as IQ score below 70-75.

Definition
Mental retardation (MR) is a developmental disability that first appears in children under the age of 18. It is defined as a level of intellectual functioning (as measured by standard intelligence tests) that is well below average and results in significant limitations in the person's daily living skills (adaptive functioning).
Sci-Tech Encyclopedia: Mental retardation
A developmental disability characterized by significantly subaverage general intellectual functioning, with concurrent deficits in adaptive behavior. The causes are many and include both genetic and environmental factors as well as interactions between the two. In most cases the diagnosis is not formally made until children have entered into school settings. In the preschool years, the diagnosis is more likely to be established by evidence of delayed maturation in the areas of sensory-motor, adaptive, cognitive, social, and verbal behaviors. By definition, evidence of mental retardation must exist prior to adulthood, where vocational limitation may be evident, but the need for supervision or support may persist beyond the usual age of social emancipation.

No, you aren't a bad parent. Many children display behaviors like the one you describe. I have seen them do it as well. This is often compulsive type behavior and they keep repeating it. If you can replace with behavior with another one that would be better. You don't mention how severe your child is, but I am guessing you have your hands full. Talk with the teacher ( if you have him in a program) or find books to help you. There are some very good books written for parents by parents and teachers for children who have problems.

What are the characteristics of mental retardation?
Mental Retardation: Typical Characteristics
(Please note that these are generalizations. There is a great deal of individual variation) Individuals with mild mental retardation (formerly referred to as "educable"): * are likely to need only intermittent to limited support; * typically do not "look" different from their non-disabled peers; * often have only mild or moderate developmental delays, except in academics, which is often the major area of deficit; * therefore, they are often not identified until they enter the school setting, where their cognitive disability is most apparent; * in Minnesota, students with mild MR spend most of the school day in the regular classroom; * they typically attain 3rd- to 6th-grade academic achievement levels by the time they finish high school; * as adults, many, though not all, with mild MR will be able to obtain independent employment; * many will marry, have children, and blend rather indistinguishably into the community; for those who achieve total independence, the label of mental retardation is no longer appropriate. Individuals with moderate to severe mental retardation (formerly called "trainable"): * will probably need limited to extensive supports; * they are more likely to have a recognizable syndrome (such as Down Syndrome); * therefore, may "look" different than their non-disabled peers;. * their development is often significantly delayed; * they are typically identified as infants or toddlers;. * most begin receiving special education during the preschool years; * they may be included in the regular classroom part of the school day (particularly here in Minnesota); * but often spend much of the school day in a separate classroom where they learn adaptive living skills; * as adults, most individuals with moderate to severe MR will not achieve total independence; * rather, they are likely to continue to need limited to extensive support such as that provided in group homes or semi-independent living situations (SILs); some may continue to live with their parents; * some individuals with moderate to severe MR may be able to succeed in modified competitive employment situations; * however, many will work in supported, non-competitive settings such as sheltered workshops.
Individuals with profound mental retardation: * will generally need services at the pervasive level, typically throughout their life; * they are likely to have multiple disabilities, particularly in the areas of mobility and communication;. * therefore, many use wheelchairs and alternate forms of communication; * their communication deficits make it difficult to accurately assess their intellectual functioning; * in educational settings, they may be placed along with students with moderate to severe MR or in their own classroom; * Some adults with this level of retardation remain in institutional settings, but most currently live in group homes. this iformaton are find in : http://www.cloudnet.com/~edrbsass/mrcharacteristics.htm Mental Retardation: Typical Characteristics

One of the characteristics of mental retardation is slower learning and it is hard to remember information learned. Poor communication skills is also a characteristic.
What supervision is needed for a moderately retarded individual?
They typically acquire communication skills in childhood and are able to live and function successfully within the community in a supervised environment such as a group home.
Students with mild mental retardation demonstrating skills in the classroom?
Generally in one rather narrow category and of highly-repetitive work that more mature students would find boring such as Math or spelling. Some borderline retarded servicement were trained in cryptography- probably through word-letter puzzles such as Jumble 9 which may have been used for training material. Under close superivision, they were capable of this work- but certainly not anything like Purple or Engima codes which were designed to be difficult to crack to begin with!- some could be taught to solve and prepare cards for the minor field ciphers.

Why did the DSM lower the IQ criteria for mental retardation?
Well, friend, the DSM lowered the IQ criteria for what is now known as intellectual disability to better reflect the needs and experiences of individuals who may require support. This change helps ensure that those who may benefit from services and accommodations receive the assistance they need to thrive. It's all about understanding and compassion, creating a more inclusive and supportive environment for everyone.
Is Autism an intellectual disability?
Generally, no. However, depending on where you are on the spectrum, you have a higher risk of being mentally challenged. For example, people with Asperger's are generally normal. Many are actually quite bright. On the other end of the spectrum, severely autistic kids many times have IQ's very low, even in the 50 range.
