James K. Polk

During James K. Polk's presidency, territorial expansion and foreign trade led to the domestic issues of slavery and tariff levels. To deal with the financial problems that arose, Polk initiated the Walker Tariff of 1846 and the Independent Treasury Act of of 1846. To deal with the issue of slavery in new territories, in 1846, the Wilmot Proviso was created and attempted to pass but did not. Polk mostly worked on Westward expansion.

Polk added over 800,000 square miles to western territory and extended the boundary of the country to the Pacific Ocean. He also lowered tariffs and created an independent federal treasury. He only served one term as promised.

During Andrew Johnson's Presidency, the 37th state, Nebraska, was admitted to the union, on March 1, 1867.

Knox was his middle name- Knox was his mother's maiden name.

Polk sent former Congressman and lawyer John Slidell to Mexico and make an offer to buy California for $30 million. He also wanted to settle the dispute about the location of the Texas border. I do not know if New Mexico was discussed.

Polk ran against whig Henry Clay. Polk's predecessor, John Tyler, was a whig and became extremely unpopular before the 1844 election.. basically, Americans were mad at the whig party and didn't want to elect Clay.

The exact cause of his death is not known. Cholera seems to be a good possibility, He suffered from diarrhea, intestinal cramps and general weakness which became progressively worse. He had a long record of intestinal problems and was not in the best of health for the young man that he was.

James K. Polk actively pursued the acquisition of California as part of his broader goals of westward expansion and Manifest Destiny. He sought to resolve the border dispute with Mexico and ultimately provoked the Mexican-American War by sending troops to the disputed territories. Following the U.S. victory in the war, the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo in 1848 resulted in California and much of the Southwest being ceded to the United States, fulfilling Polk's quest for territorial expansion. His actions significantly shaped the nation's borders and fueled debates over slavery in the newly acquired territories.

Eleventh President of the United States, James Knox Polk (born November 2, 1795 in Pineville, North Carolina; died June 15, 1849 in Nashville, Tennessee) was born to Samuel Polk, a slaveholder, and Jane Polk, née Knox.

James Polk was known for declaring war on Mexico in 1846. The Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo ended this war in 1848.

He wanted to settle the dispute with Mexico over Texas and settle the Oregon territory border dispute with Great Britain. He no doubt had a long-range goal of finding a way to extend the Western border of the US to the West coast. He accomplished all of his goals in his first term and so retired.

Polk is the only US President to have kept all of his campaign promises, including his promise not to seek a second term. His most difficult one was the annexation of the Soutwestern territories from Mexico.

James Knox Polk and his wife Sarah had a very strong marriage, according to biographers, but they did not have any biological children. However, they took in one of the president's nephews, Marshall Tate Polk, and raised him as their own.

President James K. Polk was a strong proponent of the United States acquiring more lands and expanding westward. He was a leader of the Democratic Party and held a strong belief in Manifest Destiny. To further this belief, he supported the US acquisition of several territories, including:

Polk's support of the US's acquisition of these territories was instrumental in the expansion of the country and its growth into the superpower it is today.
