How do you treat a Man O'war jellyfish sting?
As the Portuguese man o'war is not a true jellyfish (it's a colony of individual siphonophores), the sting is NOT a sting -- the lesions and irritation extend along the whip-like range of contact and continue to damage subdermal tissue. Rinsing with heated water should continue when one leaves the water, and application of vinegar or dilute ammonia to destroy the nematocysts (stinging cells) in the wounds. Some people may not respond as well to the use of vinegar.
Clinging cells can also be carefully removed with shaving cream and a blade razor, followed by application of hydrocortisone to reduce the immune system reaction to the injury.
Are jellyfish external or internal fertilization?
External. In most cases, adults release sperm and eggs into the surrounding water, where the (unprotected) eggs are fertilized and mature into new organisms.
What is a vase-shapped cnidarian body type?
It is called a polyp. Some examples are sea anemones and hydras.
What types of jellyfish are in Miami?
The most common type of jelly fish found on the coasts of Miami are Aurelia Aurita. Also called the jelly, moon jelly fish, moon jellyfish, common jellyfish, saucer jelly or swimming jellyfish.
These jellyfish can be found in the Altantic, Pacific and Arctic ocean. It feeds by stinging small medusans, plankton and mollusks with its tentacles and bringing them into its body for digestion, but is capable of only limited motion; like other jellies it drifts with the current.
u eat them out...then u eat their skittles out there butt...then u get some butter or lube....and put ur private part in the back of the jellyfish...(hopefully ur private part doesnt get stung) if it does then ur crap out of luck
How will a jellyfish respond to touch?
If a jellyfish is touched in or on its bell, a typical response would be to swim away from whatever touched it. If a jellyfish's tentacle is touched, the touch will cause stinging cells to fire, and the jellyfish then typically responds by attempting to touch whatever touched its tentacle with more tentacles, thereby paralyzing or killing potential prey.
Do jellyfish live in coral reef?
No, Jellyfish are pelagic organisms, this means that they live floating about in the upper layers of the open ocean, and while they can swim up and down in the water they are carried around in the ocean by water currents.
Is there a cocktail named Jellyfish?
Yes, a combination of Creme de Cacao, Amaretto, Bailey's Irish Cream and Grenadine which is usually served as a shot.
A marine jellyfish would not survive in a fresh water stream, because the water molecules in the ocean is what makes the jellyfish breathe and it could not be able to breathe in a different habitat. If a frog was placed in the ocean it would not survive, because it is so used to breathing through lake or swampy water molecules that the ocean' s molecules would not be stable to the frog.So really you cannot take a marine animal and switch it with an organism that live in the lake or pond, because neither will manage to survive in different habitats.
It would be in a hypotonic solution so it's cells would swell up and burst - it would try to make the salt concentration in its body the same as the concentration in the water. If it was a pond jellyfish being put in the ocean, it would be in a hypertonic solution and its cells would shrink and crenate.
hahaha for chemistry students everywhere :D
How does urine counteract a jellyfish sting?
Not only does urine not counteract a jellyfish sting, in many species it causes further evenomation by triggering more stinging cells to fire from any remaining tentacle pieces. Also, there are no known chemicals (including urine) that can penetrate the epidermis to counteract cnidarian toxins. After tentacle removal, the best known aid for the sting is to soak the affected area in near (but NOT) scalding hot water for 20 minutes. The heat does penetrate the skin and breaks down heat liable proteins.
Ice can provide moderate relief, but isn't as effective as heat treatment. Fresh water will definitely trigger more stinging cells, so tentacle remnant removal is essential before any treatment involving hot fresh water or ice.
What does a deepstaria enigmatica eat?
They eat plankton, crustaceans, fish eggs, small fish, and other jellyfish.
Who are the enemies of jellyfish?
Jellyfish enemies are sea stars and sea turtles. They are favorite meals to them.
Other species of jellyfish are among the most common and important jellyfish predators, some of which specialize in jellies. Other predators include tuna, shark, swordfish, sea turtles, and at least one species of Pacific salmon. Sea birds sometimes pick symbiotic crustaceans from the jellyfish bells near the sea's surface, inevitably feeding also on the jellyfish hosts of these amphipods or young crabs and shrimp.
The colors of a jellyfish are...?
Jellyfish are translucent, but some can have colored parts with pink, red or yellow pigments or with microorganisms inside them that give them green, brown or blue coloration's. Pigments, usually, give red, pink or violet hue's. * Microorganisms like zoochlorellae are green. * zooxanthellae are brown. * Some blue colorations can be due to the presence of Cyanobacteria. Some jellyfish, like Pelagia noctiluca or some Trachymedusae, are bioluminescent and can give off green or multicolored flashes.
They first sting their prey.
Jellies are carnivorous, feeding on plankton, crustaceans, fish eggs, small fish and other jellyfish, ingesting and voiding through the same hole in the middle of the bell. Jellies hunt passively using their tentacles as drift nets.
move from tentacles to mouth
Jellyfish eat by capturing fish or other small animals with their tentacles and dragging it into their mouths. These tentacles stun the animal so that it does not try to get away.
