The well-known chamber music composer, Franz Joseph Haydn, was born on March 31, 1732. He lived for over 77 years before his death on May 31, 1809.

Haydn did not teach Beethoven how to play an instrument, but he did give Beethoven lessons in musical composition. Beethoven struggled with Haydn as a teacher, and the two did not really get along.

Franz Josef Haydn was employed by Prince Nicholas von Esterhazy to write music for the Prince's house orchestra. Haydn's Symphony #45 in f# minor has come to be known as the Farewell Symphony because of the fourth movement. In order to remind the prince that his employees were due a vacation, Haydn wrote the fourth movement so that one by one the players stopped, packed their instruments, and left the stage, until only four violins were left playing. The prince was so amused that he relented and allowed the vacations to begin.

In general it is believed that Joseph Haydn did not have any children. Some experts, however, say that he did have a son with his lover the singer L. Polzelli in Eisenstadt.

His voice changed when he was 16 and then he got kicked out of the boys choir because he was no longer a soprano. He then tried composing and was hired by Prince Esterhazy.

The composer Joseph Haydn wrote 471 different works. Of these 68 were string quartets, 108 were symphonies, and 20 were operas.

Haydn was a composer in 18th century. By his time, the main element of music was the counterpoint (it was Baroque period). He was one of the composers to develop the genres of symphony and string quartet.
