Josephine Baker technically did not really change her name. Her original name was Freda McDonald. Josephine went by her middle name which was Josephine. Her last name changed when she married her second husband, Willie Baker. So that is why she is known as Josephine Baker. I'm doing a report on her in schools for Black History month, I know a bunch a bout her. Any other questions about her, ask me.

She proved that someone with talent can rise from a dirt poor background and conquer the world. But, she could not have done that if she had remained in the US. However, in France where she went to first perform and then take up residence, there was virtually no prejudicial barriers to success.

Jean-Claude Baker, 60 is the only one that was doing music at one point. He's the only one who Baker never legally adopted. she actually adopted 8 children and her husband adopted 4 after her death. Jean-Claude nad Baker's son Jarry, 50 run a restaurant in Manhattan called Chez Josephine. another son lives in Argentina and the other surviving siblings remain in France where Baker died
