The 2000 Ford Mustang with a 6 cylinder had a V6 3.8 Liter engine from the factory.

* Remove the rear inside trunk finishing panel to access the taillight housing mounting nuts * Free the grommet for the taillight electrical harness and the three taillight housing nuts then pull off the taillight housing * Rotate the bulb socket counterclockwise and pull it out of the taillight housing * To remove the bulb from the socket pull it straight out.To install a new bulb in the socket push it straight into the socket until it stops

My 93 does the same. Once it is hot it will get up to 3k and bog down. If I don't let up on the accelerator it will backfire and take off. The low coolant light came on briefly, but the radiator is full. The temp reads really low. Thought it might be an open thermostat, but I have good heat.

There are 2 or 3 oxygen sensors in your exhaust. "Upstream" sensors are located between the exhaust manifolds (headers) and the catalytic converter (usually located on the mid-pipe); "downstream" sensors are located after the catalytic converters.

On V6 Mustangs there can either be one or two upstream sensors and usually only one downstream sensor.

I had a similar noise in my 1997 Mustang GT. I took it to a Ford dealership and they replace the pinion bearing in the rear end. This was in 2007 and was charged $700. Now that repair would be much higher. I hope yours is less serious than this.
