- At NYPD and in other large agencies, the rank of "detective" is often permanent or semi-permanent. In smaller organizations, being a detective is often a temporary assignment lasting from one to four years. When the assignment term is up, the former detective returns to uniformed patrol.

Since they didn't 'kill him off', perhaps when a deal can be made, he may pop up again as a guest.
