The 4-speed automatic transmission in my 1990 Lexus LS400 developed problems at ~220K miles, and the 5-speed automatic in my 1999 Lexus LS400 got sick at ~160K miles (although both were still driveable).
Each cost around $3000 to rebuild (at a transmission shop... Lexus service doesn't rebuild anything).
Same driver, same driving conditions (in Houston, mostly stop-and-go), same maintenance schedule (fluid change approx every 50K).
So I suppose it's a roll of the dice what you should expect.
BTW: I still have both cars. Of the 30+ (mostly American-made) cars I've owned, these are by far the best-built (although I've never had a Mercedes). I plan to drive them 'till the paint wears off!
