Danielle Rousseau, who is commonly known as "The French Woman" among the survivors on the island, was introduced early in the first season of LOST. Sixteen years prior to the plane crash, Rousseau was a member of a French research vessel, whose ship ran aground on the island. Two months after being stranded, Rousseau gave birth to her daughter Alex; however, Alex was taken by the Island's original inhabitants, a group which Rousseau called the "Others". Alex was then brought up by Benjamin Linus, and believes him to be her father. Rousseau's primary objective was to reunite with her daughter, which was achieved in the Season Three finale "Through the Looking Glass". The reunion was short-lived; Rousseau was shot and killed by a band of mercenaries in the middle of the fourth season.

Well, the main one is probably Kate... but there are several female characters who have been the leads in several episodes.

From my understanding there were 8 episodes filmed. I looks as of today (2/10/08) that the writers strike is coming to an end and the article I read says they could be back to work this week. Which, from what I am reading means that the eight episodes will be aired, followed by a delay until more episodes can be filmed. I haven't seen anything concrete but the speculation I am reading says that we could still be watching new Lost episodes in May. Not only Lost but a lot of the others, like 24, Law and Order and other popular series.
