Louis Armstrong was known as Pops, Dippermouth and Satchmo, the latter from "satchel mouth" (his childhood habit of keeping things in his mouth to prevent other kids from taking them).

He was born in New Orleans on the August 4, 1901. His first horn was a cornet, but he became more famous playing jazz on his trumpet.

Known to sweat profusely while singing under hot lights, Armstrong made his handkerchief a regular prop in his later performances.
