Manifest Destiny and Western Expansion

Manifest Destiny is a term to describe Americans desire to explore and expand across the entire continent during the 19th century. Westward Expansion began in the United States following the end of the War of 1812. Between 1816 and 1821, six new states were added to the union, and pioneer families swept westward to fill these new lands. While westward expansion impoved the lives of many Americans, it displaced thousands of Native Americans.

How did manifest destiney play a part in the war of 1812?

During the War of 1812, the emerging United States served notice to their former European masters that they had no rights to control colonies in the Western hemisphere. It then became manifest that their destiny was to rule "from sea to shining sea."

Given that belief, (although the term itself was not yet in use) the US attacked its neighbour, with the intent of forcibly annexing Canada. British troops. natives, and Canadian militia inflicted serious losses on the invasion forces, which retreated back across the border, surrendering Detroit, Buffalo, and Fort Dearborn (Chicago).

The British went on the offensive, taking Washington and burning the White House. However, at no time did they attempt to retake the United States. In fact, weary of war after defeating Napoleon, the British rather generously turned back all the American territory it had conquered and signed the Treaty of Ghent, which ended the war.

Ironically, the American invasion, (the second since an American army attacked Canada in 1775), and that notion of Manifest Destiny, brought English and French speaking Canadians together, and began talk of nationhood, which began a reality in 1867, eventually making Canada the biggest country on the continent.

How does the California gold rush represent manifest destiny?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

People from all over the world flocked to California to pick up the nuggets that were the size of a man's fist, just lying around out in the open. It certainly must have affected the world's gold/precious metals market.

The California Gold Rush most certainly negatively affected the Yahi tribe's ability to hunt and fish in their historical home territory. Their population was estimated to be about 400 when gold was discovered in 1848. The tribe's last known survivor, believed to have been born around 1860, passed away in 1911.

the manifest destiny was a belief saying that it was the right and duty for us to spread across the North American Continent, so the positive impact would be that the manifest destiny meant that we needed more land for more opportunities, and more land meant more money, which showed how destiny was involved as the people of America made more money by having more land, which we have today!

What countries owned Oregon Country?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

The final dispute was between the US and Great Britain, which divided the area in 1846.

Four nations claimed Oregon Country at one time: Spain, Russia, Britain, and the United States. Spain dropped out of America with the Florida Treaty of 1819 and Russia dropped out with the treaties of 1824 and 1825. Britain controlled the portion north of the Columbia River. By 1846, about 5,000 Americans settled south of the Columbia River. The British had a lesser population but it did not want to give up its claims to the Columbia River. The disputed territory in Oregon Country became an issue in the election of 1844.
