Maple tree

I tapped a boxelder maple in my yard this year. I drilled a 1/4" diameter hole about 2" deep and angled upward. The hole is about three feet above the ground. I then inserted 1/4" drip irrigation tubing an inch into the hole, sealing around the hole with softened parrafin wax. The tube runs to a 1/4" hole drilled into the handle of a five gallon plastic water container (square shaped polyethylene container for storing water). Over the past three weeks (as of 2/29/08) I've gotten about five gallons of sap which has boiled down to a nice golden syrup. The sap keeps flowing -- today I got a couple of quarts. So my solution to diy spiles is no spile at all! The tube goes straight in and the wax keeps the hole from leaking around the tubing.

I doubt it. It is not a native plant for them and they would like fruit, insects, and leafy greens.

Many animals live in and around red maple trees. Squirrels and chipmunks are commonly found in red maple trees. Many types of birds can be found in red maple trees.

Walnut trees just simply let their seeds fall to the ground by encouragement of the wind or from animals like squirrels. Maple trees is more reliant on winds to take their seeds from the parent tree and carry them away where they can establish themselves. The wings on the maple seeds act like wings which can propel them through the air on the wind at quite a distance.

There is no need to plug the holes of the taps. They will "heal over" by the next season.

Oyster mushrooms typically grow on decaying wood rather than live trees. While they can colonize dead or dying hardwoods, including maple, they do not usually thrive on healthy, living maple trees. If you see oyster mushrooms growing on a maple, it may indicate that the tree is stressed or has internal decay.

There is such thing as a Maple tree. They give you Maple sap. 12 gallons of the sap can then be boiled to give you 1 gallon of Maple Syrup.

This is the tree's transport system. The leaves spin away from the mother tree in order to land and plant far enough away from the mother tree. This way, the seed can grow without being smothered out by roots or lack of water. If you pick a leaf too soon, you will see that it's slippery, pink leaf is too heavy and will not spin. Only when leaf dries out does it create the surface area plus light weight to spin. Thus, the wind shakes it from the tree, and ZOOM...the leave with the seed detaches and flies like a helicopter.

When December of your first year comes, the Japanese maple tree is one of the items unlocked.

The most common wild variety is the Bigleaf Maple- the reason for the name is obvious! They are huge trees with huge leaves. You also see a lot of Vine Maple on hillsides. Planted varieties in people's yards could be anything.
