Are maple trees toxic to horses in any way?
If your horse eaten some he will probably be OK, just make sure he's/she's resting and drinks lots of water so he/she can get it out of its system, but i wouldn't advise that any animal eat part of a maple tree. Also horses have a habit of eating just about anything and they are pretty hardy creatures so it should be fine.

Where do Norway Maple trees grow best in Iowa?
My answer is a non-answer - basically Norway Maples are pretty tough tolerant trees but they are an invasive tree, competing with and usually winning over native tree species. There are ever more desirable trees one can plant in Iowa that are large but not extremely tall trees (like the Norway Maple). Norways also seed themselves relentlessly, clogging gutters and creating seedlings and saplings everywhere. Pulling out these saplings is difficult as the roots are particularly tenacious. Consult a nurseryman for a good substitute for Norway Maples. Anyone still selling this invasive tree needs to be educated about the harm it can cause. It's a fairly soft-wood for a hardwood with branches that are fragile and inclined to come down on your house - especially with wet snow as happened to me in New York State with my Norway Maple. My neighbor cut the rest of it down and it made OK firewood with good burnability and average heat. That's the best use for Norway Maple - in a fireplace or woodstove. Another bad trait of the tree is that its roots are notorious sidewalk "heavers", worse than most any other species.

Fifty to 150 years describes how long Japanese maple trees can be expected to live. The lower range represents the ideal outside the tree's (Acer palmatum) native homelands while the upper range shows its ideal life expectancy in Japan. Longevity will depend upon the perfect match between what the environment offers in the way of air, light, moisture, pests and temperature and what acidic- and organic matter-loving, drought- and flood-sensitive, fungal disease-intolerant, girdling root-prone, Japanese beetle- and spider mite-susceptible Japanese maples need.

Why is maple sap collected in the spring instead of in the fall?
Generally the sap starts to flow between mid-February and mid-March. The exact time of year depends upon where you live and weather conditions. Sap flows when daytime temperatures rise above freezing (32 degrees Fahrenheit / 0 Celsius) and nighttime temperatures fall below freezing. The rising temperature creates pressure in the tree generating the sap flow. This is basically a transfer of the sap from the tree above the ground and the root system below the ground. The sap generally flows for 4 to 6 weeks, with the best sap produced early on in the sap-flowing season.
These conditions are not met in the fall and the sap quits running in less than 6 weeks after it starts as stated above due to rising temperatures.
