It does not kill brain cells (like the previous answer had). Marijuana has THC which works it's way from the lungs into the blood system. It then travels with the blood to the brain. There THC coats the brain cells causeing the electrical impulses between the cells to slow down (this is what causes the high effect). THC then decays off of the brain cell and leaves it unharmed and makes it way back into the blood stream. It then attaches itself to fat cells where it continues to decay until there is nothing left. The fact that it attaches to fat cells is why thc can show up on drug test a month after being ingested. Long term effect of marijuana are unknown, but short term effect (the high) are temporary.
