Welcome to the wonderful world of "hardware" guns. It would be very difficult to give you an exact age of your rifle. Witte Hardware was a large business that lasted from about 188o to 1983. At one time it was common for MANY gunmakers to make guns for others, using the purchaser's brand names. Examples of this include the Sears JC Higgins brand, the Montgomery Wards Western Field, and Western Auto's Revelation brands. In some cases, like Witte, Shapleigh Hardware, Gambles Store- the store name was used. These guns were made by Stevens/Savage, Mossberg, Marlin, Winchester, Noble- and many others. Many of these may not have a specific model (I have 2 Gambles Store Pioneer rifles, and it took 5 years to match them to original make/ model) Most of these rifles did not have serial numbers, indicating they were made before this was required in 1968. Personally, I like these guns. They were a "working man's gun"- inexpensive but sound, made to be an everyday shooter- and a reminder of a time when just about every store had a gun department.

The Marlin 1894 is a short action designed for pistol sized ammo. They're typically found in .357 magnum or .44 magnum. They were produced a few years in .22 magnum also.They can be found in .41 magnum and a cowboy version in .45 Colt. The Winchester 1894, or later just the 94, is chambered in .30-30 and .32 special.
