Welcome to the wonderful world of "hardware" guns. It would be very difficult to give you an exact age of your rifle. Witte Hardware was a large business that lasted from about 188o to 1983. At one time it was common for MANY gunmakers to make guns for others, using the purchaser's brand names. Examples of this include the Sears JC Higgins brand, the Montgomery Wards Western Field, and Western Auto's Revelation brands. In some cases, like Witte, Shapleigh Hardware, Gambles Store- the store name was used. These guns were made by Stevens/Savage, Mossberg, Marlin, Winchester, Noble- and many others. Many of these may not have a specific model (I have 2 Gambles Store Pioneer rifles, and it took 5 years to match them to original make/ model) Most of these rifles did not have serial numbers, indicating they were made before this was required in 1968. Personally, I like these guns. They were a "working man's gun"- inexpensive but sound, made to be an everyday shooter- and a reminder of a time when just about every store had a gun department.

How much will drilling and tapping a receiver on a Marlin 1893 hurt the value?
You will totally destroy the rifle as a collectors item. Don't do it!! Depending on the condition of the rifle you can turn a $600-$1200 collectors rifle into a $100 junker parts gun.
The Marlin 1894 is a short action designed for pistol sized ammo. They're typically found in .357 magnum or .44 magnum. They were produced a few years in .22 magnum also. They can be found in .41 magnum and a cowboy version in .45 Colt. The Winchester 1894, or later just the 94, is chambered in .30-30 and .32 special. The Marlin rifle chambered in .30-30 is the 336 or one of its many sub-models. Hope that helps.
When was the marlin model 88 made?
he Marlin Model 88 was made from 1948 to 1956. It was replaced by the Model 89.
The Model 88 was one of Marlin's less expensive guns, and therefore did not get serialized. Prior to passage of the Gun Control Act of 1968, guns were not required to have serial numbers, and Marlin did not serialize many of the less expensive models. It required an extra manufacturing step that added to the cost, so it was omitted.
The Model 88 would have had American black walnut used for the stock.
Will the Marlin 22 caliber model 98 or 39 magazine fit the 92?
Yes, there is a kit available which fits Marlin Lever action rimfires from 1891 thru 1939.
If you have a 1970 marlin 30-30 will the new 30-30 round shoot in this rifle?

History of the Marlin model 88 22 cal semi auto loading rifle and information on how to fix them?
The Marlin Model 88 was made from 1947-1956. The Model 88-DL has peep sights, and was made from 1953-1956. Your question on repairs is too broad to answer. Most .22 rimfire ammunition is fairly dirty. If a good cleaning and light lubrication will not fix your problem, you need to find a gunsmith to examine your rifle and fix the problem. Marlin DOES have owners manuals for many of their firearms available free at their website.
I am looking for a book that has the descriptions of how to disassemble and reassemble the firearm so that I don't have to take them to a gunsmith as I have the ability to fix them myself if only I had the correct information at hand
