Before an answer can be given, the correct model number needs to be known, as there are many variations of the Marlin Model 336. You will need to check the barrel, receiver and tang of the gun for any additional information, on this particular Model 336. Also, the complete serial number is necessary and percentage of wear on the blued metal parts and the percentage of wear on the buttstock and forearm.

The Marlin model 39 was first introduced in 1922 and continuously manufactured as a model 39 until 1936 after which it became the model 39A. Approx. 40,000 were produced in that time period. However the serial number didn't start off with zero as the numbers were interchangeable with other models. The early models such as yours didn't have a letter prefix to the serial number. Your marlin was manufactured either 1922 or 1923 when they placed an "S" prefix to indicate that only standard ammunition was to be used. Later about 1932 the prefix was changed to an "HS" to indicate high speed ammunition ,can and was encouraged to be used. The problem with the early models such as yours and those with the "S" prefix was that if high speed ammo was used ( High speed being velocity above 1114 fps...speed of sound which gives a rifle shot the distinctive "crack" when fired) was that it would crack the bolt. again, this problem was corrected in 1932.
