Julie Andrews was 30 at the time. Other sites are reporting she was 20 but she was born in 1935 and The Sound of Music came out in 1965. She would have been 30 at the time.

The book by Pamela L Travers (not related to the Mary of Peter, Paul, and Mary, by the way) was written in l934. Events take place prior to World War I, in the movie one of the songs states l9l0. The movie was released in l964- the Broadway show- which is probably different in many ways- has only been out more recently. Mary and Bert are sort of Jane Addams types with a miore middle-class focus and have super-powers. There is more than a little occultism.

The Broadway version of Mary Poppins won the 2007 Tony Award for Best Scenic Design. It was nominated for 6 other Tony Awards including Best Musical, Best Choreography and Best Leading Actor and Actress in a Musical.

I assume you meant "who" is her guy friend. His name was Bert, played by Dick Van Dyke in the 1964 movie.

But if you did mean "what", in the movie he is variously a chimney sweep, a street artist, a one-man band, and a street vendor. In the books, he is a street artist or a match seller, depending on the weather.
