Soccer is the most popular sport in Mexico, followed by baseball. Bullfighting is still somewhat popular in some regions and cities, such as Guanajuato, Puebla or Queretaro. However, this "sport" has been continuously criticized due to obvious animal cruelty, and the interest of the public has diminished accordingly.
Everyone will have a different opinion but most would say that Juan Belmonte was one of the greatest, if not the greatest, matador in history. Others might say Manolete, Dominguin, Antonio Ordonez, Carlos Arruza or even El Cordobes or another.
Killing the bull has been outlawed in some countries for its cruelty, but ironically, the most hurtful parts of the fight(The placing of the bandarillas and the stab with the lance, are still part of the fight. In most countries, the bull is killed by the matador.
The reason why the bull is killed in the arena is because the entire match plays out much like a classical tragedy. There are two adversaries. One of them, the man, has the skills and knows what's going on, while the bull has the strength, and although it doesn't know what's going on, is a very fast learner.
That's part of the reason why a bullfight may never take more than 25 minutes. If it does, the bull is taken out and killed like ordinary cattle.
Anyway, the bull can kill the man, and the man can kill the bull. The man is required to go through the three stages of the fight before he can kill the bull, while the bull can kill him at anytime. If the bull wasn't killed by the matador in the end, it would be like if Romeo and Juliet ended BEFORE the suicide; there would be no resolution to the conflict.
Taleguilla - the close-fitting tights which extend from the waist to underneath the knee worn by toreros.
Historically it was ceremonially killed by the matador at the end of the program. This is now illegal in many countries, and the bull is generally recaptured and possibly is used again in subsequent shows.
In Spanish style bullfighting both the Matador and banderillero normally encounter the quarry on foot. The Portuguese brand of Bull fighting, called Rejon ( no exact translation) is more cavalry-oriented. actual engagement of battle is on horseback.
On a trip to Spain, I attended a bullfight. They killed 6 bulls that day. I will NEVER go to another bullfight.
I have read that there have been 15 deaths but some sources say 16. Of these, 13 were from gorings.
A torero
Matador, The style and bravery of the matador is regarded as being at least as important as whether or not he actually kills the bull.
A picador is a bullfighter who uses a lance while on horseback to test the bull's strength.
banderillero is a torero who sets the banderillas (lit. little flags). These are colorful sticks with a barbed point which are placed in the top of the bull's shoulder.
A bullfighter is a torero. A torero who kills bulls is the matador. All matadores are toreros but not all toreros are matadores.
Yes. this so-called Sport is tolerated as a big money-maker ( Like Spets-Odell Baseball!) despite its many down angles. there is a vivid, uncontrolled Blood Lust among Spanish-Speaking peoples that perpetuates Bull fighing and other so-called blood sports. There are even eating or culinary customs among Spanish and Spanish Colonials which are shocking to Americans accustomed to sanitized supermarked meat marketing. I needn"t describe.
Toreros wear regular street clothes and nothing would distinguish them as being a bullfighter. They change into the traditional traje de luces in the hotel just prior to departing for the bullring.
Spain, Mexico, Portugal, France and a number of Central and South American countries hold bullfights.
The colors are rose-violet and yellow and it is called a capote or capote de brega.
To madden the bull and get a better fight out of him. If the bull is passive there is no "Bull fight". Later after the bull is exhausted and been tortured enough they use a long sword and stab him in the heart ending his final hour of pain, torture and anger. Then they offer up the body for food to the locals. Any animal tortured to death tastes bitter because of the Adrynalyne saturates the meat so the bull tastes bad.
A bullfight is a show, not a game. Maybe you're thinking of bull riding?

He wears normal underwear, some may wear an athletic supporter.
The first stage - picadores - perhaps 5 minutes or so. The same with the second stage - banderilleros. The final stage, the faena and kill, must last no more than 15 minutes or the bull will be returned to the corrals bringing great shame and embarassment on the matador. A trumpet will sound after ten minutes as a warning, again after 3 more minutes. The final trumpet 2 minutes later.
The total time from when the bull first enters the ring until it is dead and drug out of the ring usually runs about 20 minutes.
A matador would feel at home in the bullpen where the pitchers warm up.

Very few matadors have died in the bullrings in Spain in the last 50 years, but many have been injured. Only 16 runners have died during the encierro in Pamplona since they started keeping records in 1922.
A horseback matador is a rejoneador. He fights bulls from expensive and specially trained horses. That is different than a picador. The picador is the torero whose job is to weaken the tossing muscle of the bull. He does not kill the bull and, therefore, is not a matador.
